What is Atera?

Atera is a cloud-native IT management platform combining remote monitoring and management (RMM), professional services automation (PSA), remote access and a technician-facing AI assistant in one console. Agents install on the machines you monitor, but there is no server to install, patch or maintain — it runs on Microsoft Azure.

The vendor now describes two standalone products. The IT suite — also called IT Essentials — bundles RMM, PSA, remote access and AI Copilot. Robin is a separate purchase: an autonomous AI agent that resolves end-user requests on its own, and it is not part of any IT core product plan. If you evaluated the product as IT Autopilot, Robin is the same capability under a new name.

That packaging matters against RMM-only tools: ticketing and billing sit inside the same subscription rather than a second product you buy and integrate. The commercial model reinforces it — you pay per technician, not per managed device.

Core features

Monitoring, alerting and patching

Threshold profiles drive endpoint monitoring. A profile determines which alerts you receive about a device, tuned by parameters such as memory usage and CPU load and by alert type — information, warning or critical. A default profile built from Atera presets is assigned automatically to every newly installed agent, so devices report immediately.

Patch Management and IT Automation covers patching, software bundle installation, Windows version upgrades, disk management, maintenance and scripting. A profile carrying any of those tasks runs one-time, weekly, monthly or flexibly, and software installation uses Chocolatey, Homebrew and WinGet.

Automatic OID monitoring on Linux-based devices such as routers and firewalls extends coverage to printers, RAIDs and other SNMP gear. Software installation itself leans on the package-manager APIs Atera integrates, so deployments reuse existing package definitions rather than bespoke installers.

AI Copilot

AI Copilot is the technician-facing assistant, included on every plan at no additional cost — no separate purchase, activation or add-on required. It sits in the bottom-right corner of the app and opens in context from any device, ticket, alert or user.

Its behaviour changes with the object you open it from. From an alert it generates a summary then recommends resolution steps, which may include a health check, an action, or adjusting the thresholds that produced the alert. From a ticket it generates a summary plus a recommended response. Elsewhere it writes scripts and CLI commands, spins up OIDs and drafts knowledge base articles.

Help desk, contracts and billing

The PSA layer handles ticketing with SLA management, a customer-facing service portal, a knowledge base, contracts and time tracking. AI ticket tagging categorises incoming tickets by chosen keywords so requests route to the right technician, and every action any user issues is written to the main database as an activity log.

Remote access

Sessions start directly from an alert, ticket or device. Splashtop and AnyDesk are integrated options; TeamViewer and ScreenConnect connect on a bring-your-own-license basis. Unattended Splashtop access lets technicians run diagnostics, schedule updates and troubleshoot with no assigned user present, and sessions use TLS and 256-bit AES encryption.

Guide

Deploying the Windows agent

  1. Click Install agent in the top menu bar, then select Windows (.msi).
  2. Assign the agent to a customer or site and a folder. Optional, but assigning allocates every policy, configuration and automation applied at that level.
  3. Pick one of three installation methods: download the installer package, copy the command line, or share the download link.
  4. Run the install. Full admin permissions are required, and .NET Runtime 8 is installed on Windows devices as part of it.
  5. Wait a couple of minutes — the agent appears on the Devices page.

Interactive installs may prompt for a one-time password that confirms the installation is genuine. Every technician receives the OTP by email from support@atera.com, so any of them can pass it on. The code expires 30 minutes after the MSI is opened, and GPO-style system deployments skip the prompt.

Setting alert thresholds

Threshold profiles live under Admin > Monitoring and automation > Thresholds, and assignment is hierarchical with the narrower level always winning. A profile assigned to a customer flows down to every folder and agent beneath it; assigning at folder level overrides the customer level and replaces any profile already on that folder; assigning at agent level overrides both.

Set a broad baseline at customer level, then apply exceptions downward only where a folder or machine needs different alerting. Creating a profile is not enough — it takes effect only once assigned, and the default Atera preset stays in force on anything you leave unassigned.

Controlling patch behaviour

Two global settings under Admin > Monitoring and automation > Patch Management and IT Automation apply across every active automation profile. Excluded patches holds back categories such as critical updates, security patches, service packs and drivers from all profiles at once.

The default offline agent execution preference decides what happens when a scheduled automation targets an offline machine. Options are online agents only, or queuing for up to one hour, one day, one week, two weeks or one month; queued work runs as soon as the device reappears. Profiles using the "x (default)" option stay locked to this setting; others are unaffected.

Use cases and examples

Consolidating a fragmented stack. Teams running separate monitoring, ticketing and remote access products can collapse them into one subscription, since the IT suite includes all three rather than as add-ons.

Scaling device count without scaling cost. A technician license covers unlimited devices, so endpoint growth does not change the bill — a natural fit where a small team manages a large fleet, and a poor fit for the reverse.

Running a multi-tenant MSP practice. MSP plans add multi-tenant client management and white-labeling on top of the same RMM and PSA capabilities internal teams use, and client organizations are unlimited per license too.

Field and on-site support. The mobile app covers the ticket lifecycle away from a desk: creating tickets, adding attachments and time entries, editing status across multiple tickets, filtering by status, assignee and priority, and capturing a customer signature.

Who is it for

Atera serves three named audiences: enterprises, internal IT teams and managed service providers. MSP plans add multi-tenant client management and white-labeling on top of the same core capabilities the other two use.

It fits best where a small or mid-size technician team owns a device fleet that is large relative to headcount, since the bill scales with the people using the platform rather than what they manage. Independent editorial coverage reaches the same conclusion from the other side, listing one drawback — costly for large businesses — and arguing that per-endpoint pricing suits organisations where specialists each handle a few complex systems.

Teams needing heavy case management should look carefully. A review-platform analysis of 485 user reviews across two software review sites, carrying a 92% satisfaction rating, lists rudimentary ticketing as a recurring criticism, alongside limited fit with specialised third-party workflows and reports that the agent can be resource-intensive.

Organisations with strict compliance obligations should check tier first: single sign-on, network discovery, a HIPAA Business Associate Agreement and a 99.9% uptime SLA are all quote-based Enterprise features rather than defaults.

Platforms

The console is cloud-native and needs no on-premises server. Monitoring agents support Windows, macOS and Linux devices plus SNMP-discoverable network hardware, and iOS and Android apps are available from the entry plan upward.

SurfaceCoverageNotes
ConsoleBrowser, cloud-hostedRuns on Microsoft Azure; no server to install or patch
Monitored endpointsWindows, macOS, LinuxDedicated Mac and Linux RMM agents; SNMP for network gear
MobileiOS and AndroidTicket lifecycle, time entries, attachments, customer signature

Identity and single sign-on integrations cover Google, Microsoft Entra ID (Azure AD) and Okta. The customer portal and email are the default support channels, with Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 for office suite integration, and a wider catalogue of ticketing, security, backup and communication integrations can be unlocked beyond that set. Invoices can be produced through Xero and QuickBooks Online and Desktop, with a generic CSV export as fallback.

Pricing

Pricing is a fixed monthly fee per technician, based on how many technicians use the platform rather than how many devices they manage. Devices are unlimited per license, and on MSP plans so are client organizations. The 30-day trial needs no credit card.

PlanAnnualMonthlyNotable additions

Master$219/tech/mo$269/tech/moUp to 10 custom analytics reports, 20 custom asset types, 12-month audit log, 80GB/month
EnterpriseQuoteQuoteSSO, Network Discovery, HIPAA BAA, private repo, 7-year audit log, 99.9% uptime SLA

Every plan includes AI Copilot, ticketing and the service portal, Windows, Mac and Linux support, classic reports, IT automations and 24/7 chat support. MSP plans run on their own ladder; an independent review published tiers of $129, $179 and $209 per technician per month billed monthly, plus a custom-quote tier.

Two costs sit outside the base per-technician fee: network discovery and selected third-party security integrations are priced separately, and Robin is a standalone purchase never bundled into an IT core product plan. Upgrades and downgrades are allowed at any time; monthly plans cancel at any time, while annual plans run to the end of the committed term.

Atera alternatives and how to compare them

Comparison shortlists cluster around the same names. A review-platform directory that ranks Atera #13 in its RMM software category positions it against N-sight, Pulseway, Datto RMM, Naverisk, Action1, Kaseya VSA, SuperOps and Syncro. Independent editorial coverage narrows the field differently, pointing large complex estates toward NinjaOne at an expected two-to-four dollars per endpoint, and small businesses wanting the cheapest remote access toward TeamViewer.

The useful comparison axis is billing shape, not feature count. Per-technician pricing wins when devices heavily outnumber technicians and loses when a few specialists each handle a small number of complex systems. Before switching, check whether the alternative bundles PSA at all.

Limitations

Annual subscriptions need 60 days' cancellation notice. Subscriptions renew automatically for successive terms equal to the initial term at the same price, and on an annual subscription you must cancel auto-renewal no less than sixty days before expiration unless Atera permits otherwise.

AI Copilot depends on device state and assignment. Copilot functionality is limited when the related device is offline, and device-related actions require an agent assigned to the user first. Drag-and-drop is unavailable in image analysis.

Automations only reach online devices. Automation profiles can only perform tasks on online devices, which is why the offline queue setting exists. With "online agents only" selected, scheduled work on a sleeping laptop does not run.

AI output requires approval and carries no warranty. AI-generated content such as knowledge base articles and script suggestions requires manual admin approval before publication or execution, so nothing is implemented without review. The terms provide AI Features on an as-is and as-available basis with no warranty as to accuracy, and limit them to IT-related purposes.

Agent deployment has sharp edges. Installer links cannot be whitelisted in email or messaging platforms because of external provider security policies, so sharing by email will not work — use a file-sharing tool or embed the link on a website. OTP prompt behaviour is inconsistent: one attempt may require the code while the next does not. Deploying via Microsoft Intune or Citrix may create duplicate devices as those environments re-deploy it.

Tier caps apply to routine work. Monthly file transfer is metered at 15GB, 50GB, 80GB and 100GB by tier, audit log retention runs from one month to seven years, and Splashtop allows only two concurrent sessions on the entry plan.

Mobile is a companion, not a replacement. Only one photo, image or document attaches per message, Quick Reply templates must be created in the web app, and resolving or closing a ticket does not stop the ticket timer.

Privacy responsibilities sit with you. For information about your own end users, Atera is the processor and your organisation the controller under GDPR — service provider and business respectively under CCPA — so consents, data subject rights and fair processing notices are your obligations. Atera has no contractual relationship with your end users, who must contact you rather than the vendor. Models run on Azure OpenAI with North American data stored in the United States and European data kept in Europe, and Microsoft Prompt Shield filtering cannot be disabled.

FAQ

Q1. Does Atera charge per device or per technician?

Per technician. You pay a fixed monthly fee based on how many technicians use the platform, and a license covers unlimited devices — plus unlimited client organizations on MSP plans.

Q2. Is AI Copilot an extra cost?

No. AI Copilot is included on every plan at no additional cost, with no separate purchase, activation or add-on required. Robin is the product that costs extra: sold standalone and never bundled into an IT core product plan.

Q3. What is the difference between AI Copilot and Robin?

Copilot is technician-facing and works alongside your team, summarising tickets, suggesting fixes, generating scripts and drafting knowledge base articles. Robin is end-user-facing, resolves Tier-1 and complex Tier-2 incidents autonomously through the customer portal, email, Slack or Microsoft Teams, and escalates with context when an issue falls outside its scope.

Q4. Which operating systems can Atera monitor?

Windows, macOS and Linux devices, plus SNMP-discoverable network hardware. The console is cloud-native, so there is no server to install or maintain.

Q5. Can I cancel at any time?

Monthly plans cancel at any time and you can upgrade or downgrade whenever you like. Annual plans run through the end of the committed term, and cancelling auto-renewal requires notice no later than sixty days before expiration.

Q6. Is there a free trial?

Yes — 30 days with no credit card required. The terms make no warranties during a trial and do not guarantee support services then.

Q7. Does Atera use my data to train AI models?

No. Prompts, completions, embeddings and training data are not available to other customers, not used to improve OpenAI or Azure OpenAI foundation models, and not used to train Atera's own models. Customer environments are logically isolated within Azure, with MSP data segmented per end-customer.
