What is Phrase?

Phrase is a cloud localization platform for translating and managing multilingual content at enterprise scale. The company calls it a Language Intelligence Platform that automates, manages, and delivers multilingual content. Its product line spans Phrase TMS, Phrase Strings, Phrase Studio, Phrase Language AI, Phrase Custom AI, Auto Adapt, Quality Evaluation, Portal, Orchestrator, Phrase Data and Phrase Analytics.

The name covers two merged products. Phrase traces back to 2010, when Memsource launched in Prague as a translation management platform; in 2021 Memsource acquired Phrase, a developer-first localization tool founded in Hamburg, and in 2022 the two brands unified under the Phrase name. The merged platform pairs enterprise-grade translation management with software localization built for development teams.

In practice, buyers usually start from one of two workspaces: Phrase TMS for documents, content and vendor workflows, or Phrase Strings for key-based app, web and game text. Machine translation, AI post-editing, workflow automation and video localization sit on top of both.

Core features

Phrase TMS for documents and content

  • Translation management system: Phrase TMS is designed for managing large-scale translation projects across multiple stakeholders, vendors and workflows, aimed at enterprise localization teams handling structured content, files and multilingual releases.
  • Vendor-neutral workflows: Teams can work with any language service provider, and assigning multiple vendors to one translation job lets a project manager effectively run a bidding process.
  • File coverage: More than 50 file formats are supported, including Microsoft Office (DOCX, XLSX, PPTX), JSON, XML, YAML, HTML, XLIFF 1.2 and 2.0, InDesign IDML, RESX, PO, properties and Markdown.

Phrase Strings for software localization

Phrase Strings is a string management platform that connects product copy from code repositories and design tools to translation workflows. It manages text through keys across apps, websites and games rather than as documents, so developers, designers and translators can keep UI text and translations aligned while the product is still changing.

Machine translation and AI

  • Engine choice: Phrase Language AI connects to 30+ MT engines, including Google, DeepL, Microsoft and Amazon, with automatic engine selection (MT Autoselect), custom engine deployment, quality estimation and glossary enforcement.
  • Bring your own engine: Phrase TMS accepts a customer's own MT engine, custom engines deployed through Phrase Custom AI, and integrations with third-party MT providers.
  • In-house engine: Phrase NextMT is tailored to professional translation, with tag placement, glossary integration that handles morphological inflection, and translation-memory fuzzy matches.
  • LLM engine: Phrase Next GenMT is an LLM-based alternative to NextMT, built on models from Phrase's LLM providers.
  • Quality scoring: Phrase QPS predicts the MQM score a piece of content might receive in a human LQA review and outputs it as a score from 0 to 100.
  • Auto Adapt: An automated post-editing step adjusts terminology, formality level and tone of voice to keep translations consistent.

Workflow automation and Atlas

Phrase Orchestrator is a codeless, drag-and-drop workflow builder meant to let localization teams automate processes without engineers or developers. Phrase Atlas adds a conversational layer on top: a user describes the goal in plain language and Atlas configures projects, builds Orchestrator workflows, pulls reports and diagnoses issues. Atlas shows what it intends to do before changing any configuration, logs everything it does, and sees only what the signed-in user can already see.

Phrase Studio for video

Phrase Studio covers transcription, subtitles and dubbing. Transcription detects multiple speakers across 100+ languages and accepts uploads of any length up to 20 GB per file. Dubbing draws on 5,000+ AI voices across 140 languages, or on a custom voice cloned from as little as 15 seconds of sample audio.

Guide

Connecting an AI assistant through MCP

The Phrase MCP Server lets an MCP-compatible AI assistant check job status, run quality checks or start routine work in plain language, without opening Phrase. Any Phrase account with API access can use it, with nothing to install and no tokens to manage.

  1. In the AI tool, add Phrase as a remote MCP server using the EU or US server address that matches the region of the Phrase account.
  2. Start the authorization flow, sign in, pick the organization and choose what to allow: View data, Create data, or Modify and delete data.
  3. Ask the assistant to fetch the most recent Phrase project to confirm the connection; normal Phrase role permissions still apply, so the connection can narrow but never expand what the user can do.

Phrase use cases and examples

Phrase handles content ranging from software strings, websites and technical documentation to marketing content, customer support tickets, documents, subtitles and dubbing. All of these examples are vendor-published, so they show intended use rather than independently measured results.

  • Website or support translation first: Many customers start with a single use case such as website localization or customer support translation and add modules later, because the platform is modular.
  • High-volume machine translation on a budget: A team with a large volume of content and a limited budget can run all of it through Phrase NextMT and route the output to human post-editors.
  • Marketing email localization: In a customer quote, Canva says it produces over 20 emails a week and the platform keeps each one on-brand, localized and responsive without engineering effort.
  • Game and app updates: Phrase Strings plugs into game development cycles, covering UI text, dialogue and frequent over-the-air updates.
  • Auditing large programs: A localization lead quoted on the Atlas page says checking every job for empty or untranslated segments used to take the better part of two days, while Atlas now validates hundreds of job-language combinations in minutes.

Who is it for

  • Enterprise localization teams: Phrase is designed for enterprise environments with multiple stakeholders, regions and content sources, with role-based access, custom workflows and centralized governance.
  • Product managers, developers and designers: The Software UI/UX plan targets teams that manage multilingual UI copy and product text across mobile apps, web apps and games.
  • Freelance translators and LSPs: The entry-level Freelancer plan bundles CAT features, quality assurance, translation memories, term bases and integrations with GitHub, GitLab and Bitbucket.
  • Translators working for a client: Linguist accounts are created by the client's project manager. Linguists do not own these profiles, only see projects assigned to them, and cannot attach their own private translation memories, term bases or MT engines.
  • Academic institutions: Institutions that qualify for the academic program get a free Academic plan license with usage limits, such as 6,000,000 TMS processed words a year.

Phrase is a weaker fit for teams that want to pay month to month, because every self-serve price on the pricing page is billed annually, and for translators who need to work from a phone or tablet.

Platforms

  • Web app: Phrase runs in a web browser over a reliable internet connection, and the two most recent versions of Chrome, Firefox, Edge or Safari are recommended.
  • No phone or tablet editing: The Phrase TMS CAT web editor does not support phone or tablet browsers.
  • Retired mobile app: The separate mobile app was deprecated on October 31, 2024 and no longer works.
  • Desktop editor: The Phrase TMS desktop editor (version 26.3.1 at capture) runs on Windows, Mac and Linux (Ubuntu), works on translation jobs without an internet connection, and has the same feature set as the web editor.
  • Command line: The Phrase Strings CLI lets developers navigate projects and translations from a terminal on Linux, macOS and Windows.
  • Over-the-air SDKs: OTA delivery pushes translation updates to mobile and web apps without a new App Store or Google Play release, and integrates with iOS, Android, React Native, Flutter, i18next and Rails.
  • APIs and integrations: Phrase Strings offers an API, webhooks and 50+ integrations, from GitHub and GitLab to design tools such as Figma.

Pricing

Phrase pricing is organized into three plan families, with prices shown in USD, EUR, GBP or CZK. All plans come with a 14-day free trial of the platform and 24/7 customer support. No permanent free plan appears on the pricing page; the only free license found is the Academic plan.

PlanFamilyListed price (USD)Seats and scope

BusinessBusinessCustomUnlimited TMS seats, 150 Strings seats, adds single sign-on and advanced translation memory
EnterpriseBusinessCustomUnlimited TMS seats, 150+ Strings seats, all integrations including Adobe Experience Manager and Contentful
Software UI/UXDeveloper & designer$525 per month, billed annually15 Strings seats, 1M Strings managed words, unlimited languages
FreelancerFreelancer & LSP$27 per month, billed annually1 TMS seat, no Strings seats, 6 Phrase products, basic capacities
ProfessionalFreelancer & LSP$525 per month, billed annuallyUnlimited TMS seats, 15 Strings seats, adds vendor management and LQA

The Freelancer & LSP family also has Business and Enterprise tiers at custom prices.

Capacity matters as much as list price. Team includes 2,500,000 TMS processed words and 12,000,000 machine translation units a year, while Business raises these to 12,000,000 words and 50,000,000 units. Quarterly billing does not add volume: the annual allowance is split, so a plan with 2.5 million words a year gets 625,000 words per quarter. Phrase Studio video localization is an add-on on Team, Business and Enterprise. Atlas is included on all plans except freelance plans.

Some organizations are on credit-based plans instead, buying a prepaid Phrase Credit Pool that each capability draws down at its own rate. Once the pool is used up, the capabilities stay available and further usage is charged as on-demand consumption. Phrase Platform is also sold through AWS Marketplace, where pricing and plans are arranged by contacting Phrase.

Phrase alternatives

The closest substitutes depend on which half of Phrase a team needs:

  • Crowdin: A software-localization platform for teams that want to start free or pay monthly. Its pricing page offers monthly or annual billing for individuals and teams, while organization plans are annual billing only.
  • Lokalise: Another software-localization platform whose plans can be billed monthly or yearly, and all of its plans come with a free 14-day trial with no credit card required.
  • Trados Studio: A fit for translators who prefer a desktop CAT tool; Trados describes Studio as working either in a desktop tool or online in the cloud.

Against these, Phrase's distinguishing points are one platform spanning documents, software strings and video, plus a vendor-neutral TMS.

Limitations

Capacity, billing and cancellation

  • Capacity stops: When an organization reaches any pricing-metric capacity, the feature that hit its limit may be restricted across the whole organization.
  • Ghost jobs: Once TMS processed words run out, new job imports through the UI, API or continuous localization become "ghost" jobs with no word count that cannot be downloaded.
  • No MT without units: When machine translation units run out, MT is unavailable in TMS analyses, pre-translation and CAT editor suggestions.
  • Workflows stop: All Orchestrator workflows are undeployed once the executed-actions capacity is reached.
  • Expiring credits: On credit-based plans, credits left unused at the end of the term expire and do not carry over to a renewal.
  • Cancellation window: A subscription cannot be cancelled within its last 30 days, and only account owners can manage subscriptions.
  • Data deletion: An ended subscription can be reactivated for 60 days, after which customer data is deleted.

File limits

  • A single TMS import, or a batch of files imported in one request, is capped at 1 GB, with ZIP and plain PDF files limited to 100 MB each.
  • A new version of a source file can be uploaded to an existing job only once every 30 minutes.

AI training and data handling

Whether customer content trains a model depends on the feature. Phrase says it does not use any customer content or translations to train or retrain Phrase NextMT. Phrase QPS, by contrast, is trained and periodically retrained on customer content, and Phrase says that training data is regularly deleted. For LLM-based features, Phrase says its enterprise-level agreements ensure customer content is not stored by its LLM providers or used to train their own models. Phrase lists its current LLM providers as OpenAI, Google, Microsoft and Anthropic. Customers control whether AI features are activated across all projects or only selected ones.

Phrase a.s. (formerly Memsource a.s.) is certified for ISO 27001, and Phrase is SOC 2 Type I certified, with Type II certification expected in 2026. The platform is hosted on Amazon Web Services, while Phrase Studio runs in Google Cloud Platform data centers.

Third-party reception

Independent rating signals are thin and point in different directions. The cloud-marketplace listing shows 4.5 out of 5 from 1,337 ratings, nearly all syndicated from other review platforms, as captured on October 5, 2026. A consumer review site shows a 2.5 out of 5 score from only 8 reviews as captured on October 5, 2026, several of them complaining about steep price increases; that sample is too small to judge quality.

FAQ

Q1. Is Phrase the same company as Memsource?

Yes. Memsource acquired Phrase in 2021, and the two brands unified under the Phrase name in 2022. The Czech company Phrase a.s. was formerly called Memsource a.s.

Q2. Is there a free version of Phrase?

Every plan starts with a 14-day free trial. Beyond that, the pricing page lists only paid plans, and qualifying academic institutions can apply for a free Academic plan license with usage limits.

Q3. What is the difference between Phrase TMS and Phrase Strings?

Phrase TMS manages document and content translation projects across vendors and workflows, while Phrase Strings manages key-based UI text for apps, websites and games, with over-the-air updates. Many organizations use both together.

Q4. Can I translate in Phrase on a phone?

No. The CAT web editor does not support phone or tablet browsers, and the mobile app stopped working after October 31, 2024. The desktop editor for Windows, Mac and Linux allows offline work instead.
