What is CodeSignal?

CodeSignal describes itself as an AI-native skills platform with three products: Hire for recruiting teams, Learn for individuals and organizations, and Education for career-readiness programs at academic institutions.

This profile centers on Hire, the technical assessment platform side, where hiring tests, AI interviews and cheating detection live; Learn and Education appear where they change price, platform or audience.

The operator is CodeSignal, Inc., a Delaware corporation, and its terms define Hire as an online coding platform that lets business customers invite candidates to coding challenges for interview purposes. The company started in 2014 as CodeFight, a competitive coding platform, then moved toward technical assessment and rebranded as CodeSignal in 2018, according to independent tech press reporting.

Core features

Skills assessments

  • Real-world IDE: Technical assessments run in a full-featured IDE where candidates can build, run and test applications as they would on the job.
  • Certified Assessments: They are written by subject-matter experts and validated by I-O psychologists, and the vendor says each is backed by 2,800 hours of research and testing.
  • AI-assisted mode: Employers can enable full AI assistance to mirror on-the-job workflows, or limit AI to syntax and documentation help.
  • Choice of model: For AI skills tests, customers can choose which large language models power the assessments to meet internal security, compliance and governance requirements.
  • Test length: AI literacy assessments typically take 20–30 minutes, while more advanced technical assessments may take 60–90 minutes.

The AI setting changes what a score means. Traditional assessments prohibit unauthorized AI use and detect AI-generated code, while AI-Assisted Assessments put Cosmo, the integrated AI assistant, inside the test so employers can see how candidates work with it.

AI Interviewer and phone screens

  • Structured first round: Candidates hold a short interview with a specialized AI Interview Agent that asks follow-up questions when answers are thin, and hiring teams receive a report with an overall score, skill evaluation and key insights.
  • Agents by role: Role-specialized agents cover areas such as sales, finance, marketing, accounting, recruiting, BDR and product, and customers can also create a custom agent.
  • Length: A typical AI phone screen runs about 15 minutes, and time limits can be set per role, for example 10–20 minutes.
  • Guardrails: The vendor says agents are bound to the customer's rubric and context, with input sanitization, context isolation, rate limits and human oversight, and transcripts show exactly what was asked.

Live tech interviews

For later rounds, CodeSignal works as a coding interview platform where interviewer and candidate share one environment.

  • Shared environment: Live interviews run in a cloud IDE with built-in video, audio, chat and whiteboarding, and the interview page lists 4,000+ interview questions across 70+ coding languages.
  • Tooling: The collaborative IDE gives candidates build tools, package managers, filesystems, interactive preview and mobile device emulators.

Cheating and fraud detection

  • Suspicion Score: It analyzes fraud signals such as solution similarity, telemetry and copy-paste activity, and flags patterns that may indicate AI-assisted behavior.
  • LeakSweep: It monitors public sites like Stack Overflow and LeetCode for leaked CodeSignal questions and supports DMCA takedown workflows.
  • AI proctoring: Video, audio and screen activity are recorded for the whole session, human reviewers validate activity flagged by multi-agent analysis, and results arrive within one hour.
  • ID verification: Candidates show a valid government-issued photo ID, and the system matches their name and ID photo to the person on camera.
  • Dynamic questions: Thousands of question variations rotate so candidates do not receive identical assessments.
  • Optional controls: Teams can disable copy and paste, add IP tracking and location signals, and apply these controls only to higher-risk roles.

These are vendor descriptions; the pages reviewed publish no independent accuracy or false-positive rates for Suspicion Score or the proctoring review.

CodeSignal Learn and Cosmo

Learn gives individuals Cosmo, an AI tutor with context-aware feedback, along with AI-driven conversation simulations and an IDE that simulates on-the-job tools.

Guide

Rolling out AI Interviewer

  1. Define the role: Bring a job description and preferences, and CodeSignal maps skills, competencies and priorities to a 1–5 scale while keeping your wording.
  2. Tune the agent: Set the agent's tone and focus areas; it then asks follow-up questions to deepen answers.
  3. Pilot: CodeSignal can run side-by-side scoring with your reviewers plus an adverse impact study on the pilot.

Sending a first assessment on a self-serve plan

  1. Pick a plan: The startups and SMB offer starts at $79/mo and is set up in minutes with no sales calls required.
  2. Find the test: Tell Cosmo what you are hiring for, or share a job description, and Cosmo picks an assessment for the role.
  3. Send invitations: Send the test from CodeSignal or from a connected applicant tracking system.
  4. Review the evidence: Open the skills report, then replay the session or read the transcript to see how the candidate worked from first approach to final answer.

CodeSignal use cases and examples

  • High-volume first rounds: CodeSignal suggests AI interviews as a first pass for volume roles, a customer-facing screen before role-plays, Support/Ops scenarios, or an engineering behavioral screen before technical rounds.
  • Two-stage funnels: According to the vendor, most teams use AI interviews at the top of the funnel to screen volume and live interviews later for candidates worth a deeper look.
  • Shift-based hiring: AI phone screens target high-volume roles where candidates can respond between shifts or classes instead of waiting for a scheduled call.
  • Workforce AI readiness: Organizations also run AI skills assessments on current employees to benchmark AI readiness, find skill gaps and measure progress.
  • Interview preparation: Individuals can use Learn paths such as Four-Week Coding Interview Prep in Python and Behavioral Interview Practice for CS Students.

Who is it for

  • Small and growing hiring teams: The Hire plans are positioned as Build for small teams making their first technical hires, Grow for teams hiring across more roles and functions, and Pro for organizations that need advanced security and support.
  • Recruiters, learners and schools: CodeSignal points recruiters to Hire, people building their own skills or upskilling a workforce to Learn, and institutions running career-readiness programs to Education.
  • Candidates: A candidate who creates their own CodeSignal account is also treated as a Learner, with an account that exists apart from any single job opportunity.

Less suited:

  • Teams that want software to make hiring decisions on its own, which the terms rule out.
  • Candidates without a webcam, microphone, screen sharing or government photo ID, all of which proctored tests ask for.

Platforms

  • Web: Completing an assessment requires a computer with a connection of at least 500 Kb/s, a camera, microphone and screen sharing, a government-issued photo ID, and the latest Chrome or Firefox.
  • Phone or browser for AI interviews: A sample AI Interviewer session can be joined with a phone number or directly from the browser.
  • ATS integrations: CodeSignal connects with applicant tracking systems including Greenhouse, Lever, Workday, iCIMS, SmartRecruiters and JazzHR, so assessments can be sent from the ATS and results synced back to candidate profiles.
  • iOS: The Cosmo learning app is free in the US App Store, sold by CodeSignal, INC., rated 4+, requires iOS 16.4 or later, and showed a 4.8 average from 835 ratings as captured on October 5, 2026.
  • Android: The Android version is rated Everyone, offers in-app purchases and lists 100K+ downloads with a 4.7 rating; the store page showed both 1.98K and 1.95K review counts as captured on October 5, 2026.
  • AWS Marketplace: CodeSignal Assessments & Live Tech Interviews is sold through AWS Marketplace by CodeSignal, Inc.; the listing showed 4.5 stars from 1,416 ratings (8 marketplace reviews, 1,408 imported from external review platforms) as captured on October 5, 2026.

Pricing

CodeSignal pricing is split by suite: Hire is sold as credit-based plans, Learn as a subscription, and Education as a quote per institution.

Hire planList priceIncluded creditsWhat the plan includes
Build$79/mo billed annually or $99/mo billed monthly60 annual or 5 monthlyUniversal and core tech assessments, agentic assessments with Claude, Cursor and Codex, Product, Design and Engineering AI Interviewers, 2,000 questions, AI proctoring and ID verification
Grow$479/mo billed annually or $599/mo billed monthly420 annual or 35 monthlyEverything in Build plus more agentic assessments, Go-To-Market assessments, Sales, CS and Marketing AI Interviewers, and basic ATS integrations
ProCustomCustomEverything in Grow plus all assessments and AI Interviewers, Advanced Fraud Prevention and RBAC, enterprise ATS integrations, and a dedicated CSM with quarterly business reviews

A credit is used only when a candidate starts an assessment, AI interview or live interview, not when the invitation is sent, and one credit pool covers all three formats. Once included credits run out, on-demand credits cost $20 each and are billed on the next cycle, so hiring is not cut off mid-search. Neither the pricing page nor the startups page reviewed mentions a free trial for Hire plans.

CodeSignal Learn is free for individuals to start, unlimited Cosmo+ access costs $24.99 per month, Teams and Enterprise plans are custom-priced, and Learn carries no per-credit charges. Education is custom-priced by program size, from a single Department Pilot to Multi-Program and Institution-wide rollouts.

Paid Services renew automatically for periods of the same length unless auto-renewal is switched off in account settings, and they cannot be terminated before the end of a period already paid for. The terms say CodeSignal does not refund Paid Services, except to Learners in countries and regions where applicable law requires it.

CodeSignal alternatives

An independent software-selection comparison updated September 29, 2026 benchmarks CodeSignal against four alternatives: DevSkiller, Coderbyte, HackerEarth and Mettl.

  • HackerRank: HackerRank sells Chakra, an agentic interviewer that runs the whole screen, and offers a free trial.
  • CoderPad: CoderPad offers coding assessments under Screen and 360° technical interviews in a collaborative IDE under Interview.
  • HackerEarth: HackerEarth positions itself as an evaluation layer that enterprises use to hire, benchmark and develop teams, and that AI labs use to test models.

Limitations

  • Human decision required: CodeSignal's terms state the Services are not an automated employment decision tool and do not by themselves make or recommend employment decisions, and customers agree not to use them to automate any decisions.
  • AI output risk: The terms warn that AI output may be biased, inaccurate, unfair, discriminatory or incomplete, and make users responsible for reviewing and validating it.
  • Search rules in certified tests: Certified Assessment rules allow only syntax searches, so candidates can look up syntax but cannot get outside help with the logic of a solution.
  • Inconsistent library figures: Question counts differ by page: the Build plan lists access to 2,000 questions, the startups page cites up to 3,000 ready-to-go questions for live interviews in 70+ languages and frameworks, and the live-interview page cites 4,000+.
  • Metered free learning: The Cosmo app description pitches Cosmo+ as the way to learn faster with unlimited energy. At Learn's February 2024 launch, tech press reporting described five free energy bars, one spent per Cosmo question or code evaluation and one recharging every four hours; current free limits were not stated on the pages reviewed.
  • Age floor: Children under 13 are asked not to register for or use the Services.

Candidate data and privacy

  • Identity documents: The privacy policy lists identifiers such as driver’s license, state ID card and passport numbers among the personal data collected.
  • Recordings: Collected data can include screensharing and other audiovisual recordings from certain proctored tests.
  • Monitoring software: Proctored tests may require candidates to share information about their physical test environment and install monitoring software; that information is kept only as long as needed to confirm identity and promote testing fairness.
  • Who sees results: For Hire Talent Services, personal data is disclosed to the prospective employers a candidate is seeking employment with.
  • Score sharing: Learners can share assessment scores with third parties only with their permission, in each instance.
  • Inference: CodeSignal says it may use test results to predict technical abilities or expertise.
  • Session replay: Under the privacy policy, continued use of the Services counts as consent to session replay technology.
  • Cookies: CodeSignal says it sells or shares personal data only through cookies, with an opt-out right.
  • Conflicting data lists: The compliance page lists candidate data as first name, last name, email address and IP address, which is narrower than the ID numbers and proctoring recordings named in the privacy policy.
  • Certifications: Every Hire, Learn and Education plan includes SOC 2 Type II, GDPR and CCPA compliance and encryption at rest and in transit, while enterprise plans add a custom DPA, SSO/SCIM/JIT, custom security review and audit logs.
  • Infrastructure: The platform is built on AWS, and CodeSignal undergoes an annual SOC 2 examination by an independent third party, with the report available to customers and prospects on request.
  • Mobile app disclosures: The Android listing declares no data shared with third parties, possible collection of personal info, app activity and device IDs, encryption in transit, and a way to request deletion.
  • Model training: The privacy policy and terms reviewed do not state whether candidate submissions or recordings are used to train AI models.
