What is Law Insider?

Law Insider is a contract drafting, review and research service for lawyers that combines a browser-based AI Assistant, a Microsoft Word add-in and a searchable database of public contracts and clauses. The homepage pitches it as AI for lawyers whose drafting, review and redlining are grounded in 5.3M real contracts. The three products are sold together: you draft in your browser, review and redline in Microsoft Word, and search the contract database under one Pro subscription.

Law Insider was acquired by SimpleDocs on September 30, 2025. SimpleDocs already ran its own AI contract drafting, redlining and review platform. The paid plan and the add-in now carry the SimpleAI name: SimpleAI is the engine inside the Law Insider Word Add-in, using the same AI and the same clause database inside the document.

Database size claims

The database size figures differ by page. All are vendor statements as captured on October 6, 2026, except the last, which is independent reporting from 2025:

  • The homepage says search covers 200 million clauses across 100+ jurisdictions and 40+ languages, alongside its 5.3M contracts figure.
  • The pricing FAQ says the paid plan includes access to 20M+ contracts and 200M+ clauses.
  • The AI contract review page describes its alternative clauses and redlines as powered by a 20M clause database.
  • Independent legal-technology coverage of the acquisition reported that Law Insider claimed 5 million contracts and 20 million clauses spanning more than 50 languages.

The pages checked this round do not reconcile these figures, so the exact size of the collection is unverified.

Core features

The three products share one subscription and one clause library, and the AI contract review and drafting tools sit on top of the search database, so most suggestions can be traced back to source agreements.

AI Assistant in the browser

  • Risk-ranked review: you can review an uploaded agreement and see the issues ranked by risk, then redline it in full.
  • Precedent comparison: when the assistant compares language, you can open the source agreements used in a comparison to check the context.
  • Summaries and negotiation text: the AI Assistant can summarize long agreements, generate internal communications, and suggest alternative clauses or responses for negotiation.

Word add-in (SimpleAI)

  • Tracked changes: contract redlining happens inside Word, with suggested edits written into the document itself as tracked changes that you accept or reject.
  • Version comparison: the add-in can compare versions and catch silent edits.
  • Playbooks: you can build a playbook from your own template, or use a standard playbook, and review each agreement against it.

Contract and clause search

  • Filters: clause search results can be narrowed by contract type, industry, governing law, company and date.
  • Search without AI: Law Insider Search works on its own, so you can search contract language and read the original agreement without touching an AI feature.
  • Source coverage: the database includes public contract material beyond SEC filings, US companies and English documents, according to the homepage FAQ.

Legal research by jurisdiction

Research runs inside the assistant's chat. You select the jurisdictions relevant to your question before you send it, and the answer draws on those sources so you can follow the citations and check it.

Free standard templates

Law Insider also hosts contract standards such as oneNDA, oneSaaS and oneDPA. The oneNDA mutual NDA is described as entirely free to use, and it is licensed under CC BY 4.0, which gives teams a neutral starting template without a subscription.

Guide

The steps below condense the vendor's masterclass workflow for an inbound master services agreement (MSA) in the browser-based AI Assistant, followed by the Word add-in installation path.

Review and redline an inbound agreement

  1. Upload the PDF to the AI Assistant and use "Download as .DOCX" from the document's menu to get an editable copy.
  2. Ask the assistant for the clause you are missing; suggestions are grounded in Law Insider's contract and clause library.
  3. Adjust the result: one click switches the suggested clause between legalese and plain language, and the Balance control re-cuts it to favor either party.
  4. Attach the agreement and ask the assistant to insert the new provision.
  5. Ask for a short cover email to the counterparty explaining the changes.
  6. Use "Convert to .PDF" on the updated document and send it back.

Turn a fix into a repeatable check

Projects store a standing instruction for recurring issues. In the guide's example, you copy the principle behind a change, go to Projects, create a new project, name it (for example "AI Data Training Check") and paste the principle into the custom instructions. Every agreement later uploaded to that project is assessed against it, and the redlines can then be previewed and opened in Word.

Verify what the AI drafted

When the assistant drafts a clause, the "See Source" option shows the similar clauses from real contracts that ground the drafted language, so you can check it rather than trust it. For complex documents, you can switch on "Advanced reasoning" from the model picker.

Install the Word add-in

  1. Open Microsoft Word, click "Add-ins" in the top menu and select "More Add-ins".
  2. Search for "Law Insider" in the dialog and click Add; the add-in then appears in the Word ribbon.
  3. If the add-in store is blocked by corporate settings or login issues, install it manually from the manifest file instead.

Use cases and examples

The vendor's walkthroughs and customer quotes point to these concrete, repeatable jobs:

  • Adding a missing protection to a supplier contract: the guide's lead example is a service provider's MSA with no provisions against using your data to train AI models, fixed by finding a market clause, inserting it and returning a redline.
  • NDA review against your own playbook: once a project instruction is set, each NDA review takes one upload and one line, with a differences table, risk scores, redlines and persuasive comments produced from the instruction.
  • Benchmarking a single clause: with search mode enabled in a new chat, you can test a clause against the entire Law Insider database and ask for an issue-by-issue comparison table.
  • Sorting search results: an "Add AI Column" option in search classifies every result, for example whether each clause is customer-friendly or supplier-friendly.
  • In-house review programs: a Herbalife counsel quoted on the homepage says the company chose SimpleAI as its AI-powered contract review solution after an evaluation and testing period.

Who is it for

Law Insider says it is used by more than 10,000 organizations worldwide, including global law firms and in-house legal teams. Its plan structure points to distinct buyer profiles:

  • Solo lawyers: the self-serve plan is positioned for individual users who need AI-powered contract drafting, review and redlining together with database access.
  • Legal teams: the Enterprise tier targets teams that need advanced custom playbooks, precedent benchmarking, an AI repository, custom contract workflows and integrations.
  • Precedent researchers: because search works without AI and oneNDA is free, people who mainly want to read real clauses can stay on free access.

It is a weaker fit for:

  • Minors: the terms require users to be at least 18 years old.
  • People seeking advice on their own legal problem: the service provides legal information and drafting tools, not a lawyer's opinion (see Limitations).

Platforms

Law Insider runs in two places: a web app for the AI Assistant and search, and an add-in inside Microsoft Word.

  • Web: the AI Assistant runs in any modern browser on desktop or laptop.
  • Microsoft Word: the add-in works in Word for Windows, Mac and the web, beside the document you are already editing.
  • Add-in store requirements: installing from the store works best with Microsoft 365 Word or Word 2021 and when your Microsoft account allows store access; a manual manifest-file install is the fallback.
  • Distribution: besides the in-Word store, the add-in can be installed from Microsoft AppSource.
  • Languages: the AI Assistant and Word add-in work across languages and jurisdictions; you specify the language when you ask for a translation.
  • Integrations: integrations such as CRM, eSign and CMS are listed only for Enterprise plans.

Pricing

Law Insider pricing has one self-serve paid plan, called Pro on the homepage and SimpleAI on the pricing page, plus a sales-led team tier. As captured on October 6, 2026, the homepage lists Pro at $179 per month after the trial. The pricing page defaults to annual billing at $1,790 per user per year.

Trial and billing rules

  • Card at signup: the homepage trial requires a card. Nothing is charged during the first 7 days. The AI contract drafting page, however, says no payment details are required for the AI Assistant free trial, describing it as free online use with usage limits. Both statements are published.
  • Automatic renewal: subscriptions renew automatically until you cancel, and a free trial converts into a paid subscription unless cancelled before it ends.
  • Cancellation: you can cancel from account settings, and access remains active until the end of the billing period.
  • Payment methods: all major credit cards are accepted, and Enterprise customers can request invoicing.
  • Legacy plans: as of May 2026, all legacy Law Insider plans were upgraded into SimpleAI plans.

Refunds

The homepage offers a 30-day money-back guarantee: contact support within 30 days of your first payment for a full refund. The terms of service, by contrast, say that cancelling ends automatic renewals but Law Insider keeps any fees already collected, and the terms page checked this round does not mention the guarantee.

Law Insider alternatives

  • Spellbook: an AI contract product that reviews contracts, drafts agreements and keeps positions consistent across a deal, before and after signature. It also opens with a 7-day free trial.
  • SEC EDGAR full-text search: the free government search gives access to the full text of electronic filings since 2001, so public-company agreements can be found without a subscription. Law Insider's own pitch is that its database reaches beyond SEC filings, US companies and English documents, which marks the main difference from EDGAR for precedent research.

Limitations

Not legal advice

  • Legal information only: the terms say AI output does not constitute legal or other professional advice. Neither Law Insider nor its legal information is a substitute for advice from a qualified attorney. Using the service does not create an attorney-client relationship with Law Insider.
  • AI output can be wrong: the terms say output may be inaccurate or inappropriate for the input provided and is supplied "as is". You are responsible for quality control of the output, including human review and verification.
  • Third-party clauses and templates: Law Insider says it is not responsible for the content or accuracy of third-party content such as legal clauses and contract templates.
  • Non-exclusive output: other users who give similar input may receive output that is similar or identical to yours.
  • Template scope: the oneNDA page itself advises consulting a lawyer for complex situations involving personal data or sensitive IP.

Contract terms that affect you

  • Arbitration: disputes go to binding arbitration by JAMS. Claims can only be brought on an individual basis, not as a class or representative action. You can opt out by mailing a written notice within 30 days of first accepting the arbitration agreement.
  • One-year window: any claim against Law Insider must be brought within one year of when you knew, or should have known, the facts behind it.
  • No bulk extraction: the terms prohibit copying in bulk, harvesting or indexing any portion of the service, which covers scraping the clause database.
  • Unpublished free limits: the free tier is described only as limited access; the pages checked this round do not state how many searches or downloads it allows.

Privacy and data handling

  • No training on customer content: the terms say Law Insider does not, and requires its third-party providers not to, use Customer Content to train AI or machine learning models.
  • Third-party processing: the same terms say content submitted to AI features is transmitted to and processed by those features, including their third-party providers. The AI contract review page, by contrast, says documents are never shared with third parties. Both statements are published.
  • Separation from the public database: the homepage says your documents are kept separate from the public contract database.
  • Add-in permissions: the add-in's store listing says it can read and make changes to your document. The same listing says it can send data over the Internet.
  • Certifications: Law Insider lists SOC 2 Type II, TX-RAMP and GDPR, with reports in its Trust Center; these are vendor statements.
  • Retention and deletion: personal data is retained while your account exists or as needed to provide the service. Under the terms, customers may request deletion of their content.
  • No data sales: the privacy policy says Law Insider does not sell personal information or share it for cross-context behavioral advertising.
  • Output ownership: Law Insider does not claim ownership of any output.

FAQ

Q1. Is Law Insider free?

Partly. Limited access to the contract database is free and the oneNDA template is free to use. Full AI drafting, review and Word add-in access comes with the paid plan, listed at $179 per user per month or $1,790 per user per year as captured on October 6, 2026, after a 7-day trial.

Q2. Can I rely on Law Insider's AI output as legal advice?

No. The terms say neither the AI output nor any other content on the service is legal advice, and they make you responsible for reviewing and verifying every result before relying on it.

Q3. Does Law Insider train AI models on my contracts?

The terms say it does not, and that it requires its third-party AI providers not to either. Your content is still processed by those providers when you use AI features.

Q4. Which versions of Word does the add-in support?

Word for Windows, Mac and the web, with a manifest-file install for accounts that block the add-in store.

Q5. Can I get a refund?

The homepage advertises a full refund if you contact support within 30 days of your first payment. The terms of service say fees already collected are kept after cancellation, so the two published policies differ.
