What is Image to Text Converter?

Image to Text Converter is a browser-based OCR (optical character recognition) service at imagetotext.io that converts uploaded pictures into editable text you can copy or download. The site says its recognition is built with OCR, the open-source Tesseract engine and other Python libraries.

The name is a generic description shared by many unrelated OCR websites, and this page covers only the service hosted at imagetotext.io. The legal pages checked do not name a registered company: the terms of service refer to the operator only as "our Company". An Android app called Image To Text is published on Google Play under the developer name Softo Tech, uses the site's support email address and lists a developer address in Pakistan.

Access is freemium. Small batches run without an account, while credit-based plans start at $6 a month and raise the per-submission and file-size caps. For many buyers the open question is data handling rather than features: the upload box promises that nothing is stored, yet the privacy policy says nothing about how uploaded images are kept or deleted.

Core features

The converter is a single upload panel built to extract text from image files, with two recognition modes, Simple OCR and Formatted, plus several ways to export the results.

  • Ways to add images: You can paste an image, drag and drop it, browse your device or enter an image URL so the tool fetches an online photo.
  • Source material: Beyond ordinary photos, the tool is pitched at screenshots, handwritten notes, printed pages and scanned documents.
  • Copy or download: Each result can be copied to the clipboard or downloaded as a .txt file.
  • Bulk export: After a batch, a Download All menu offers Formatted Text, HTML Code and Markdown exports.
  • Recognition languages: The homepage lists 20 languages: Chinese, Indonesian, Danish, German, English, Spanish, French, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Swedish, Czech, Russian, Thai, Korean, Arabic, Turkish, Dutch and Vietnamese.
  • Low-resolution input: The vendor says the extractor can read blurry and low-resolution images, such as dim photos of books, handwriting and screenshots.
  • Math notation: The site also claims it can extract mathematical expressions, including arithmetic equations and polynomial expressions.
  • File formats: The homepage gives three different format lists: the upload box shows JPG, PNG, JPEG, GIF, JFIF and PDF, the how-to steps name JPG, PNG, JPEG, BMP, GIF and TIFF, and the feature list adds WEBP to that second set.
  • History: A History panel sits beside the converter but is locked for free users behind an upgrade prompt.

The homepage describes the pipeline in three steps: it scans and extracts the text, performs location segmentation to arrange the text according to the image, and then shows editable text in the output box. The low-resolution and math claims are vendor statements; no independent accuracy test of the site was found. The same website also hosts separate converters such as Image to Excel, Photo Translate, PDF to Word and PDF to Excel, and the pricing page meters several of them in the same credits as image-to-text jobs.

Guide

The homepage walkthrough has four steps. The mode choice and the export menu are the parts that differ from a bare upload box.

  1. Open the converter and choose the Simple OCR or Formatted mode.
  2. Upload or paste your image into the input box, or enter an image URL.
  3. Press the Submit and Extract button and wait for the converted text to appear.
  4. Copy the extracted text or download it, using Download All for batch exports.

For handwritten notes, the site's only advice is to take clear pictures of the pages before uploading them and copying the result. Free users can submit up to five images per run, so a larger stack of pages needs several passes or a paid plan's 50-image limit.

Use cases and examples

The homepage lists concrete jobs rather than industries, and most of them involve paperwork that would otherwise be retyped by hand.

  • Data entry from paperwork: The homepage positions the tool for pulling text from invoices, receipts, forms and tables into databases or spreadsheets, and points bulk tabular images to the site's separate Image to Excel tool.
  • Study notes: The homepage says students can convert scanned notes, textbooks and lecture notes, and turning handwritten notes to text is one of its headline examples.
  • Accessibility: The site notes that text converted from printed or handwritten pages can then be read aloud by screen readers.
  • Legal and government paperwork: The site suggests extracting key details from contracts, legal documents and government forms.

Invoices, contracts and government forms are also the kinds of documents for which the missing retention statement described under Limitations matters most.

Who is it for

The clearest fit is someone with occasional or moderate volumes of printed or photographed text who wants a browser tool rather than installed software.

  • Office data entry: Offices converting invoices, receipts and other documents into editable text are the first audience the homepage names.
  • Individuals and students: Personal uses it lists include digitizing handwritten notes and turning printed books into e-books.
  • High-volume teams: Users who outgrow the listed plans can ask support for a custom plan.
  • Developers: The contact form has an "Enterprise Plan for Web / API" option, but no public API documentation turned up on the pages checked.
  • Privacy-sensitive workloads: Buyers who need a written deletion timeline or a statement on model training will not find one in the privacy policy.

Platforms

The core service is the website itself; app and add-on listings exist outside it and are not linked from the homepage.

  • Web browser: On phones the upload area adds an Open Camera button to take a photo or pick one from the device.
  • Site languages: Besides English, the website interface is offered in 19 other languages, including Spanish, German, French, Russian, Korean, Chinese, Portuguese, Arabic and Turkish.
  • Android: The Image To Text app on Google Play shows 100K+ downloads, contains ads and in-app purchases, and was last updated on September 16, 2026, as captured on October 6, 2026. Its description lists four converters (Image to Text, JPG to Word, PDF to Word and JPG to PDF), photo capture from the camera or gallery, and a stored usage history.
  • Firefox: A Firefox add-on named "Image To Text - imagetotext.io" at version 0.1.3 was last updated on June 11, 2021, showed 2,751 users as captured on October 6, 2026, and requests access to your data for all websites.

Pricing

As a free online OCR option, the converter can be used without signing up, according to the homepage. The free tier is listed at $0 with 200 credits, five images per Image to Text submission and a 7MB file limit, against 50 images and 30MB on every paid plan. Paid plans are billed monthly or annually, and the annual toggle is labelled "Yearly - 40% Off".

PlanMonthly billingAnnual billing
Basic$6 a month with 10,000 credits$57 a year (shown as $4.75 a month) with 120,000 credits
Standard$9 a month with 22,000 credits$75 a year (shown as $6.25 a month) with 264,000 credits
Premium$20 a month with 100,000 credits$144 a year (shown as $12 a month) with 1,200,000 credits
Lifetime PlanOne payment of $99 for 1000 days with 100,000 creditsSame card on both tabs

On the listed figures, only Premium's drop from $20 to $12 a month matches the 40% label; Basic and Standard are reduced by less. The Lifetime Plan is a 1000-day term displayed as $2.97 a month, and its tool list (Image To Text, PDF To Word, Word to PDF, JPG To Word, JPG To PDF, PDF to Text, Image to HTML) leaves out Image To Excel and Image Translator.

Every paid card lists a 30MB file limit, 50 images per submission, both Simple OCR and Formatted text, Historic Data, 24/7 live support and the Image To Excel, Image Translator, PDF To Word and PDF To Excel tools. The upgrade prompt on the converter adds "No Ads" as a paid benefit, while free pages show advertisement slots.

Credits are charged per item: Simple OCR costs 1 credit per image and Formatted OCR 10, while Image Translator takes 15 credits per image, Image to Excel 20, and PDF to Word or PDF to Excel 1 credit per page. Free limits are tighter on those sibling tools: Image to Excel allows one image of up to 5MB per submission, Image Translator has no free allowance, and PDF to Word or PDF to Excel caps free jobs at 100 pages or 20MB against 1,500 pages or 100MB on paid plans.

Cancellation and refund rules:

  • Subscriptions can be ended at any time from Account Settings; the plan stays active until the end of the billing period and is not charged again. Cancellation also works through a Cancel Subscription button in the account area, the contact form (processed in 1-2 days), email or the 24/7 live chat.
  • Refunds apply only to the latest or currently active plan, and only if its queries have not been used. Duplicate charges and a wrong plan bought before the correct one (with the same validity period) are also refundable.
  • Plans bought at a sale discount and recurring renewal charges are not refunded; checkout offers manual renewal instead.
  • A change of mind, a partly used plan, buying after being satisfied with the free version, and custom plans are also listed as non-refundable.
  • Approved refunds return to the original payment method minus bank charges, special-case refunds also deduct the processing fee and used queries, and requests are typically reviewed within 2-3 working days.

Image to Text Converter alternatives

Two directions differ meaningfully from a hosted OCR site: running the underlying engine yourself, or using another web OCR service that states its deletion rules.

  • Tesseract (self-hosted): Tesseract is the open-source OCR engine the site names, distributed as a library and a command-line program without a bundled graphical interface. It can recognize more than 100 languages out of the box, against the 20 listed by Image to Text Converter. As installed software, it suits users who would rather not upload documents to a website, at the cost of a command-line workflow.
  • OnlineOCR.net (web): Its guest mode is free without registration for 5 files per hour, with files up to 15 MB. It states that guest uploads are deleted automatically after conversion and that registered users' output files are stored for one month. It lists 46 recognition languages.

Compared with these two, Image to Text Converter offers 50-image paid batches, a Formatted mode and bundled converters in one account, but gives no comparable deletion statement for uploads.

Limitations

  • Inconsistent free-tier rate: The pricing page's two comparison tables disagree on the free Image to Text request rate, listing 50 requests per minute in one and 5 in the other.
  • No accuracy warranty: The terms say the operator does not warrant the completeness or accuracy of information on the site and does not promise that it will remain available; the terms page was last updated on December 31, 2025.
  • Formatting complaints: On a third-party review platform, an AI-generated summary of 126 recent reviews notes that some reviewers were unhappy with formatting, citing text spacing, compressed layouts and visual presentation in converted documents, and a few asked for line-spacing or color options.
  • Review signal caveats: The same company profile showed a 4.7 rating from 153 reviews as captured on October 6, 2026, alongside a platform note that the company has not invited customers recently, so reviews may not be representative; the profile covers the whole site, not only the image converter. The company replied to 66% of negative reviews, typically within 24 hours.

Privacy and data rights

  • The upload box says "No data is transmitted or stored."
  • The homepage FAQ promises to keep all images and converted text "100% secure".
  • The privacy policy is more guarded, stating that no method of transmission or electronic storage is 100% secure and that absolute security cannot be guaranteed.
  • Neither the privacy policy nor the terms checked say how long uploaded images or extracted text are kept, when they are deleted, or whether they are used to train models; those points are not addressed.
  • Paid plans list "Historic Data" and the converter has a History panel, which the pages checked do not reconcile with the no-storage banner.
  • Registering an account may involve giving your name, company name, address, email address and telephone number.
  • Log files record IP addresses, browser type, internet service provider, date and time stamps, referring and exit pages and possibly the number of clicks.
  • Google and other third-party vendors use cookies to serve ads based on a visitor's prior visits.
  • Among the uses of collected information, the policy lists developing new products, services, features and functionality, as well as marketing and promotional messages.
  • The policy lists GDPR rights, including access (for which a small fee may be charged) and erasure under certain conditions, plus CCPA rights, and allows one month to respond to requests.
  • Information is retained for as long as the account is active or as needed to provide the service.
  • The site says it does not knowingly collect personally identifiable information from children under 13.
  • The terms license the site's own material for personal use and do not address ownership of uploaded images or extracted text.
  • The Android app's data-safety section is a developer declaration: no data shared with third parties, data encrypted in transit, deletion requests available, and personal info and app activity among the data types it may collect.
