What is Clipdrop?

Clipdrop is a collection of AI image tools that runs in the browser at clipdrop.co. It removes backgrounds, erases unwanted objects and text, upscales, relights, uncrops and resizes photos, and generates new images from text prompts. Each tool has a free daily allowance; a Pro subscription raises the limits and unlocks high-resolution output, and a separate API exposes several of the same models to developers.

Ownership and operator

Clipdrop was built by InitML, a company co-founded in 2020 by Cyril Diagne, Jonathan Blanchet and Damien Henry that went through the Y Combinator Winter 2021 batch. InitML was acquired by Stability in February 2023 and then sold to Jasper.ai in February 2024. At the time of the 2023 sale, Clipdrop said it had more than 15 million users. A news report published at the time of the sale said Jasper planned to offer Clipdrop through its own platform while keeping it available as a standalone product.

Clipdrop's current legal pages do not name a single operator. The legal notice names Jasper AI Global, LLC, a Delaware limited liability company, as the publisher of the website. The general terms of use, by contrast, identify INIT ML, a French simplified joint-stock company, as the company providing the service, and give a Jasper support address as its contact email. The privacy policy likewise names Init ML as data controller. Both statements are reproduced here side by side because the pages themselves do not reconcile them.

Core features

Every tool sits on its own page, accepts an uploaded image and returns a downloadable result. The main editing tools are:

  • Remove background: the tool extracts the main subject of a photo, and its upload area accepts up to 10 files at once. The tool handles images of up to 5000x5000 pixels.
  • Cleanup: Cleanup is the tool for removing objects, people, text and defects from pictures. You paint over the area and the model fills in what was behind it.
  • Text remover: there is no manual selection step; the tool detects the text in an image and removes it automatically.
  • Image upscaler: the image upscaler is described as enlarging images by 2x or 4x while also removing noise and recovering detail. Clipdrop's API page goes further and says images can be upscaled up to x16, and the Pro plan lists an x16 upscaler, so the available factor depends on plan and page.
  • Relight: after uploading a photo you move virtual light sources around the scene and download the relit version.
  • Uncrop: Uncrop changes an image's aspect ratio by generating the content that falls outside the original frame.
  • Replace background: you supply a photo and a text description, and the tool removes the original background and returns four background alternatives.
  • Text to image: Clipdrop Stable Diffusion generates four pictures per prompt, and a style can be added to the prompt. Five aspect ratios are offered, from Cinematic (21:9) and Widescreen (16:9) through Square (1:1) and Portrait (4:5) to Vertical (9:16).
  • Universal Resizer: the resizer adapts one image to the dimensions used by Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest and TikTok.

The tools are designed to chain. Replace Background combines background removal with image generation, and the text remover pairs naturally with the upscaler when source images are small. On the developer side, the text-to-image API is described as an implementation built on top of Stable Diffusion and optimized for speed, which is the same model family behind the web tool. The background removal API returns a PNG by default and can return WEBP or JPEG when the request sets the matching accept header.

Guide

Removing an object with Cleanup

  1. Open Cleanup and upload the image.
  2. Paint over the object, person or text you want gone. A larger brush that covers slightly more than the target, including its shadow, gives the algorithm more to work with.
  3. Download the result.

To remove objects from photos, the steps are simply to open Cleanup, upload the image, select the object and download the result.

Making a transparent PNG from a JPEG

  1. Upload the JPEG to Remove Background.
  2. Let the model separate the subject from the background.
  3. Download the result in PNG format so the transparent background is kept.

Removing text from a low-resolution image

On low-definition images the text detector can miss characters that are hard to read. Running the image through the upscaler first improves the resolution before the text is cleaned from the image.

Calling the API

  1. Obtain a Clipdrop API key; requests are authenticated with an x-api-key header.
  2. Send an HTTP POST whose body is multipart/form-data containing the image file, for example to the background removal endpoint.
  3. Read the response headers, which report how many credits the request consumed and how many remain.

Clipdrop use cases and examples

The use cases shown on Clipdrop's tool pages are concrete enough to judge fit:

  • E-commerce product shots: the AI background remover is positioned for online stores that need clean, visually appealing product images.
  • Real estate listings: agents use Cleanup to remove unwanted objects from property photos, and the text remover is suggested for clearing signs and walls.
  • Retail catalogs: the text remover can strip the brand names of products a store does not sell from catalog images.
  • Photo printing: photographers use Cleanup to remove time stamps from pictures before printing them for customers.
  • Social media formats: one image can be adapted to the formats of several social networks through the Universal Resizer.

Who is it for

  • Professionals and consumers alike: the subscriber terms state that the services are intended for professionals acting within their commercial activity as well as for consumers.
  • Social and marketing teams: the Universal Resizer is aimed at social media managers, content creators, marketers and casual users who need images in several formats.
  • Businesses that want the models in their own products: business customers are directed to the Jasper API, while individuals keep buying Clipdrop on clipdrop.co.
  • Occasional editors: the free tier covers light, one-off edits such as removing a background or erasing a small object.

Clipdrop is a weaker fit for teams that need a service-level commitment, custom output sizes in the resizer, or a native mobile app that can be confirmed in the app stores today; those gaps are covered under Limitations.

Platforms

  • Web: the visitor terms state that the services are accessed directly through the website at clipdrop.co.
  • Mobile: several FAQ answers tell mobile users to install the Clipdrop app from their phone store. A search of the US App Store and Google Play on October 6, 2026 (UTC) did not return a Clipdrop app published by Init ML or Jasper; the listings found under the same name belong to unrelated publishers.
  • In-app purchases: the subscriber terms state that all payments and subscriptions made through the mobile application are handled by the app store operator.
  • Desktop plugins: the homepage FAQ refers to installing Clipdrop on the desktop and using Clipdrop Plugins with Photoshop, but no download link for these appeared on the pages checked.
  • Cross-device subscription: a Pro subscription works on both mobile and desktop.
  • API: the inpainting API can be called from environments such as Node.js, SwiftUI and Kotlin, and the documentation provides code samples.

Pricing

The pricing page lists three options. The Pro price below was captured from the rendered page on October 6, 2026 (UTC) and matched the price returned by the checkout provider for a US customer.

PlanPrice shownDaily limitsOutput and access
Free0 US$20 per 24h for background removal, x2 upscaling, cleanup and relight; 50 per 24h for text removal; text to image, uncrop and replace background listed without a numberStandard versions of each tool
Pro15 US$ per month1000 per 24h on each listed toolHigh-resolution versions of each tool, an x16 upscaler, and skip-the-queue text to image and uncrop
APIUsage-based cost60 requests per minute per key by default1 credit per successful call; 100 free credits for development

For Cleanup, the free version limits exports to 720px and the Pro version has no size limit. The text remover is free for pictures under 1024 and resizes larger pictures, and HD output requires Pro. The pricing page as displayed shows only a monthly Pro price and does not say whether free downloads carry a watermark.

Billing terms

The subscriber terms describe both a monthly and an annual subscription that renew tacitly for the same period, although only the monthly price appeared on the pricing page. A subscription has to be terminated at least 7 days before the end of a monthly period, or 1 month before the end of an annual one. Any period that has started is due in full. Consumers lose the statutory right of withdrawal for digital content once they have agreed that the service starts immediately and have waived that right. The terms are governed by French law, and consumers can use a consumer mediator free of charge to settle disputes.

API credits

The web pricing page lists the API only as a usage-based cost and links to a separate API pricing page that did not show any prices when captured. Each successful background removal call costs one credit. After logging in, developers can claim 100 free API credits intended for development and debugging; further calls are rejected once they are used. The API documentation states that Clipdrop is now part of Jasper and directs anyone who needs newer image models or more credits to Jasper's team.

Clipdrop alternatives

Independent listings of Clipdrop alternatives include dedicated background removers and broader product-photo editors:

  • remove.bg: a dedicated background remover that also includes an AI background generator creating custom backdrops without a written prompt. It suits users who only need cutouts and replacement backgrounds rather than Clipdrop's wider toolset.
  • Photoroom: an editor aimed at product photography that advertises batch processing for editing thousands of images at once. Photoroom also has a free iOS app on the US App Store, which matters to anyone who wants a confirmed mobile option.
  • Jasper API: for developers, the route recommended by Clipdrop's own API documentation for newer image models and additional credits.

Limitations

Product and API limits

  • Image compatibility: the terms of use warn that certain photographs or images of objects may not be compatible with the website, and the company accepts no responsibility for montage or photo quality.
  • No service-level guarantee: the company does not offer any guarantee of the level of service of the website.
  • API input caps: the background removal API accepts PNG, JPG or WEBP files up to 25 megapixels and 30 MB.
  • API output and prompts: the text-to-image API returns 1024x1024 images and limits prompts to 1000 characters.
  • API rate limit: each API key is limited to 60 requests per minute by default.
  • Upscaling API bounds: the upscaling API accepts PNG, JPEG or WebP inputs up to 16 megapixels and 30 MB, and the target width and height must each be between 1 and 4096 pixels.
  • Liability cap: the company's liability is capped at the amounts it received during the 12 months before the event giving rise to a claim.
  • Resizer constraints: the Universal Resizer does not support custom sizes yet. It can resize up to 1000 images per day.
  • User feedback: on a public review platform, Clipdrop held 3.1 out of 5 based on 18 reviews as captured on October 6, 2026 (UTC). That sample is too small for firm conclusions; its summary mentions slow queues, login failures, inconsistent quality and slow support responses.

Rights, privacy and data handling

  • Commercial use: Clipdrop states that its terms do not limit the use of images generated on Clipdrop for commercial purposes.
  • AI training by users: users may not use the services for research or development of artificial intelligence, in particular to generate training data.
  • Prohibited content: uploads and outputs may not be pornographic, obscene or unsuitable for a family audience, among other restricted categories.
  • Uploaded images: the privacy policy lists storing your photos on Clipdrop's cloud for service improvement purposes among the reasons for processing images. Whether uploads are used to train models is not stated.
  • Retention: without an account, images, photographs and texts are kept for two years.
  • Hosting location: the privacy policy says personal data is hosted on Google Cloud Platform servers in the United States. The visitor terms of use, however, say data is hosted on servers located within the European Union.
  • Policy date: the privacy policy names Init ML as data controller and carries an entry-into-force date of June 21, 2022.
  • Data rights: the policy lists GDPR rights such as access and erasure, and privacy requests go to privacy@clipdrop.co.

FAQ

Q1. Is Clipdrop free?

Yes, within daily limits. The free plan allows 20 uses per 24 hours for background removal, x2 upscaling, cleanup and relight, and 50 for text removal, with lower output resolution. Pro costs 15 US$ per month and raises the limit on each listed tool to 1000 per 24 hours.

Q2. Can I use images made with Clipdrop commercially?

Clipdrop says its terms do not limit commercial use of images generated on Clipdrop. The terms do forbid using the service to generate AI training data and prohibit certain content categories.

Q3. Who owns Clipdrop?

InitML, the original developer, was acquired by Stability in February 2023 and sold to Jasper.ai in February 2024. The legal notice names Jasper AI Global, LLC as publisher, while the terms of use and privacy policy still name Init ML.

Q4. Does Clipdrop have an API?

Yes. The API covers background removal, cleanup, upscaling, text removal, uncrop, replace background and text to image. Each successful call costs one credit, 100 free credits are available for development, and requests for more credits are directed to Jasper.

Q5. How do I cancel Clipdrop Pro?

The terms allow cancellation through your account or by contacting the company, at least 7 days before the end of a monthly period or 1 month before the end of an annual period. Any period already started is due in full.
