Contentful is an API-first, composable digital experience platform with a headless CMS at its core: teams model structured content once and deliver it through APIs to websites, apps and other channels. Since September 2026 some official pages carry the "Contentful from Salesforce" branding, after Salesforce completed its acquisition of Contentful on September 1, 2026.
The company was founded in 2013 by Sascha Konietzke and Paolo Negri, and its operating entities include Contentful GmbH in Germany and Contentful Inc. in the United States. At the time of the acquisition announcement, Salesforce described it as a composable content platform trusted by over 4,800 brands, and said Contentful will be integrated natively across Customer 360 while keeping the composability developers expect from a headless platform.
Recent positioning leans toward AI as well as people: the homepage says Contentful lets you create content that customers trust and agents understand, with built-in personalization and content ready for answer engine optimization (AEO).
Two points shape any evaluation: the self-serve price jumps from a $0 Free plan to a $300 per month Lite plan, with the AI and personalization add-ons reserved for Enterprise; and the Free plan is an evaluation tier, not a free way to run a business site.
Contentful is organized as four products. Contentful Platform is the core content product for creating, managing and scaling structured content across digital channels; Personalization, Studio and AI Actions build on top of it.
Contentful AI Actions automate content tasks such as translating, rewriting, reviewing and summarizing, and can start from pre-built templates or fully custom workflows where users set prompts, choose models and adjust temperature.
Contentful Personalization is described as an AI-native personalization engine for experimenting, targeting and analyzing content experiences inside Contentful, based on any data source. Even the entry Start tier includes unlimited A/B test and personalized experience creation; higher tiers mainly add monthly active profiles and AI Suggestions (see Pricing).
Contentful Studio is a visual workspace for designing digital experiences with reusable templates, content binding and design controls. Developers register their own components for Studio through the Experiences SDK and API.
Palmata is a separate AI discovery platform from Contentful for managing how answer engines such as ChatGPT and Gemini describe a brand. The June 2026 launch post says it includes an MCP server and offered a free first report for marketers. It is a distinct product, not a feature of the CMS plans.
Signing up does not require a credit card, and the Free plan includes one Starter Space. The getting-started flow is short:
For several websites or apps, Contentful recommends a separate space for each project. To deliver the same content to web, iOS and Android, it recommends one space with several API keys instead of duplicating content across spaces.
EU data residency is arranged through sales: after the add-on is selected, Contentful provisions a new organization in the EU data residency region rather than switching an existing one.
Official customer stories show where the platform is used:
Contentful fits organizations that publish the same structured content to several channels, brands or regions and have developers to build the front ends.
User sentiment is positive but thin. As captured on October 6, 2026, a peer-review platform showed 4.3 out of 5 from 22 reviews, with 100% willing to recommend, too small a sample for firm conclusions. On the same platform, Contentful is most commonly compared to Adobe Experience Manager.
Contentful is used through a browser-based web app and a set of APIs.
Contentful pricing below comes from the official pricing page as archived on July 23, 2026; current prices may differ.
| Plan | Listed price | Who it targets | Main inclusions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 forever | Learning and exploring the Platform | 10 users, 2 roles, 2 locales, 100K API calls and 50 GB CDN bandwidth per month |
| Lite | $300 per month | Smaller businesses managing a single project | 20 users, 3 roles, 3 locales, 1M API calls and 100 GB CDN bandwidth per month, comments and tasks, scheduled publishing, live collaboration |
| Enterprise | Custom, via sales | Scaled digital experiences | Unlimited API calls, custom CDN bandwidth, 24/7 support with Customer Success and Professional Services, up to a 99.99% uptime SLA |
Lite includes one Starter Space, and one additional Lite Space can be bought separately. Only the Enterprise card lists compatibility with Personalization, Studio and AI Actions.
Personalization is available on Enterprise Platform plans, and all three tiers are priced through sales. The Start tier includes 100K monthly active profiles and 100 AI Suggestions, Core raises this to 500K profiles and 500 suggestions, and Scale to 1M profiles and 1000 suggestions, with upgrades available to purchase.
Fees are payable in US dollars or euros depending on location; payment obligations are non-cancelable and non-pro-ratable for partial months, and fees paid are non-refundable. After you cancel, recurring billing stops immediately and the organization moves to the Free plan at the end of the current billing period.
Other headless CMS vendors publish self-serve prices between Contentful's Free and Lite plans, which matters for small teams. Their prices below were read from their own pricing pages on October 6, 2026, while Contentful's figures date from July 2026.
| Product | Entry option | Next paid step |
|---|---|---|
| Sanity | Free plan for individuals experimenting or shipping smaller projects | Growth at $15 per seat per month |
| Storyblok | Starter plan for testing and personal projects; 45-day free trial of Growth Plus | Growth at $99.00 per month billed monthly, or $90.75 per month billed annually |
| Contentstack | Free plan at $0 per month | Build at $29 per month, Growth at $299 per month |
Contentful's case rests on its Enterprise add-ons and compliance documentation; the trade-off is the gap between a non-production Free tier and the $300 Lite plan.
No. The terms limit free and trial use to non-production cases and prohibit personal or other regulated data.
As archived on July 23, 2026: Free at $0, Lite at $300 per month and custom Enterprise pricing, with add-ons priced through sales.
Contentful says organization data is not used to train the models behind AI Actions, and neither Contentful nor its providers use customer data to train Personalization AI models.
Yes. Salesforce completed the acquisition on September 1, 2026.
Content can be stored in the EU region through a Premium-only add-on hosted on AWS Ireland with backups in AWS Frankfurt, but Contentful does not guarantee that the data is only processed in or accessed from the EU.
