Camtasia is a desktop screen recorder and video editing software from TechSmith, used to turn on-screen work into tutorials, training videos and product demos. TechSmith presents it as AI-powered screen recording and video editing that helps people turn their knowledge into engaging videos. The software is licensed by TechSmith Corporation under an end-user licence agreement that covers Camtasia for Windows and Mac.
On the current website, Camtasia is also the name of a wider product suite that, in the company's words, combines advanced screen capture, professional editing and generative AI workflows. The Camtasia Editor does the recording and timeline editing; plans bundle it with sibling apps such as Camtasia Snagit (screenshots and step guides), Camtasia Audiate (text-based editing, AI voices and avatars) and Screencast (hosting and review).
The short version: the Editor can be used for free with watermarked exports, paid access is sold only as yearly subscriptions from $39.00 to $599.00 for individuals, and the app runs on Windows and macOS only.
Camtasia combines a recorder and a non-linear editor in one app, so footage does not need to move between tools before it is cut, annotated and exported.
The AI features are where plan choice matters most. Script and audio generation inside the Editor is available with a Camtasia Audiate, Camtasia Create or Camtasia Pro subscription, and on the plan cards voiceover generation first appears in Create. Voiceover generation turns text into narration with more than 200 voice options in various styles. Translation of audio and transcripts covers 7 languages and 9 dialects, and stock AI avatars are part of the Pro plan.
Getting from download to a clean export takes a few account-related steps that are easy to miss:
Most documented workflows start from material a team already has, such as meetings, slides, step guides or screenshots.
Camtasia fits people who explain software and processes on screen and then polish the result. TechSmith's own use-case list targets videos that onboard and upskill teams, showcase products, help customers succeed, support learning, and teach systems, software and workflows.
Good fit
Less suitable
Camtasia is a desktop application for Windows and macOS, with a separate browser tool for lighter work.
Store pages disagree on the macOS floor. The individual plans page lists MacOS 14+ compatibility for all of its plans. The Teams & Business and Education pages list MacOS 13+ compatibility instead.
Device rules also read differently depending on the page. The product FAQ says each Camtasia license is valid for use on two devices by the same user. The individual licence agreement says the software may be installed on an unlimited number of devices but signed in on only one device at a time. For Teams & Business, the store FAQ says a licence can only be used on one machine at a time.
Camtasia pricing is yearly: every listed price on the three store tabs checked on October 5, 2026 is billed per year, and no monthly option was found there.
| Plan | Price | Camtasia Editor | Additions listed on the plan card |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | $39.00 per year | Watermarked | Camtasia Snagit capture, blur and redact, unlimited 4K/60fps recordings |
| Essentials | $179.88 per year | Full | Camtasia Audiate, text-based editing, filler word removal, unlimited captions, quizzes and SCORM export |
| Create | $249.00 per year | Full | Script generation from prompts, voiceover generation with 200+ voices |
| Pro | $599.00 per year | Full | Avatar generation with 49 styles, script translation, audio dubbing, 100 million+ stock assets, unlimited Screencast sharing |
The Starter plan is mainly a Camtasia Snagit capture plan, because it includes the Camtasia Editor only in watermarked form. TechSmith says the plans are unlimited, subject to the Terms of Service, which contain an excessive use clause; the plan cards list no monthly AI credit allowance. An individual subscription is just for the buyer, and anyone who needs to transfer access to another user is pointed to Teams and Business licences.
| Licence | Listed price | Intended buyer | Key terms |
|---|---|---|---|
| Business | $198.00 per user per year | Teams up to 99 users | A single 25-character key; seats can be reassigned |
| Enterprise | Custom quote | Large organisations | Site licence for every user; price locked for 3 years |
| Educators | $162.36 per user per year (list $198.00) | Teachers, professors and instructional staff | A single 25-character key; transferable |
| Students | $45.00 per year (list $179.88) | Verified full-time students | Sign-in licence, non-transferable |
A Business licence lists only Camtasia Editor and Camtasia Snagit as included products. Volume discounts start at ten licences and are not available for individual subscription licences. The student discount is available in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, and eligibility is checked through a third-party verification partner.
A technology publication's review of Camtasia lists "not a budget tool" as its only reason to avoid the product.
The main trade-offs are price model, free-tier limits and how much editing is needed.
Yes. The Camtasia Editor can be downloaded and used with all editing features, but exports carry a watermark until a paid plan or Business licence is bought.
No new perpetual licences are sold for current versions: 2025 and later versions are subscription licences, and existing perpetual owners keep the versions they bought.
Recording and editing work offline, but the app must connect at least once every 90 days to confirm the subscription, and some AI and cloud-sharing features need a connection.
The privacy notice says content processed through its AI features is not used for training unless a product offers, and the user accepts, an explicit opt-in programme.
