Plantin (styled PlantIn on its website and app listings) is a plant identifier app that recognizes plants from photos using machine-learning models and a large species database, then layers disease checks, care schedules and paid botanist consultations on top of the identification.
It runs as an iOS app, an Android app and a web version that share one account. The service is operated by Vortemol Limited, a company incorporated under the laws of the Republic of Cyprus.
Brothers Mykhaylo and Dmytro Grynets launched Plantin in 2020. A Ukrainian startup-media profile describes it as one of the youngest projects in the Genesis ecosystem, employing a team of 70 people. In 2023 the same team introduced CoinIn, an app for identifying rare coins and estimating their value.
Three facts shape most buying decisions: web plans start with a discounted introductory period and then renew automatically at a higher price, botanist answers cost extra, and the Terms make no promise that identification or care results are accurate.
The identifier takes a photo and returns a species match with care information attached. Plantin's own figures for that identifier are not consistent across its pages, and none of them comes from an independent test:
Plant disease diagnosis works from a picture of the affected plant: the AI names the likely problem and attaches a guide for restoring the plant, and more complex cases are referred to the Botanist Help service. A separate pest identifier follows the same pattern for bugs and insects, naming the specific plant problem and explaining how to get rid of it.
Care schedules are generated by AI from factors including season, temperature, lighting, humidity, hemisphere, plant toxicity, hardiness zone and hibernation period. Plant care reminders then arrive as push notifications, and the library sorts plants by their upcoming care needs.
Botanist Help routes questions to people rather than the model: you describe the problem, attach a few images and submit the request, and Plantin matches it with a specialist who writes a tailored solution. The service page says its certified botanists handle requests 24/7.
The iOS listing describes a mushroom identifier that also works offline and is promoted for identifying edible mushrooms and detecting poisonous specimens. That is the developer's description; the Limitations section covers how the Terms treat accuracy.
Beyond the app tools, the website hosts species guides, a blog and a separate Weed section with cannabis articles, including a guide to identifying and treating cannabis nutrient deficiencies.
Plantin's use cases are tied to specific situations: seasonal timing, outdoor weather, pets and plants in decline.
Plantin suits owners of several houseplants or a small garden who want identification, reminders and treatment guidance in one place rather than an encyclopedia.
Plantin provides simultaneous access to its web and mobile versions, and data is synchronized between them.
The iOS app is listed as a free download, and the Android app carries in-app purchases. The pages checked do not state how many identifications or diagnoses a free account gets; Premium is described as adding a personalized care journal, ad-free blog access, unlimited use of the Light Meter, Watering Calculator, disease diagnosis and plant identifier, and unlimited care guides.
Web subscription prices as captured on October 6, 2026:
| Web plan | Introductory charge | Then renews at |
|---|---|---|
| 1-week trial | $11.99 for the first week | $39.99 every 4 weeks |
| 4-week plan (marked most recommended) | $15.99 for the first 4 weeks | $39.99 every 4 weeks |
| 12-week plan | $39.99 for the first 12 weeks | $79.99 every 12 weeks |
The same page headline offers "a 3-day trial to explore PlantIn before your subscription really begins," while each plan card shows a charged introductory period, so the two descriptions do not match. Plantin may also change subscription fees at any time, with notice posted in the app or sent by email.
Two routes lower the cost of a Plantin subscription: promo codes unlock 30 days of Premium, and the academic program described above gives eligible students and educators a free year. Promo access does not roll into a paid plan; the FAQ says users are not charged once the 30 free days end. Premium can also be gifted; the FAQ requires the friend's device to run "IOS version 5.7.1 (or later) or Android version 2.22.0 (or later)."
Botanist Help sits outside the plan list: requesting it means completing a form and submitting a separate payment, and no price for it appeared on the pages checked this round.
An AI tool directory lists PlantSnap, LeafSnap, Blossom, iNaturalist and PictureThis as Plantin's main competitors. Independent accuracy data on Plantin itself is thin, so the comparison below rests on what each alternative is built for.
Plantin's case against these is scope rather than proven accuracy: it bundles identification with care schedules, reminders, a disease library and paid human answers in one subscription.
These disclaimers matter most for the mushroom identifier and the Toxicity Checker, where a wrong answer is a safety issue rather than a wilted leaf.
On a third-party review platform, Plantin's company profile holds a 4.3 rating from 523 reviews, with 69% five-star and 17% one-star ratings (as captured on October 6, 2026). The platform also notes that the company has not invited customers recently, so those reviews may not be representative.
Its AI-generated summary of 381 recent reviews praises fast, friendly support but reports complaints about unexpected subscription costs, confusing free trials and auto-renewals, and identification tools that did not always give accurate health assessments.
The privacy policy checked this round does not say whether uploaded plant photos are used to train identification models.
The iOS and Android apps are free to download, but unlimited identification, disease diagnosis, care guides and tools require Premium. On the web, plans start at $11.99 for a first week before renewing at $39.99 every 4 weeks.
Use Settings → Membership in the app, or Settings → Subscription Info on the website for web purchases. App Store and Google Play subscriptions must be cancelled at least 24 hours before renewal, and uninstalling the app does not cancel them.
Store purchases are refunded, if eligible, by Apple or Google. Website purchases are non-refundable except where the law requires it, unless you qualify for the money-back guarantee within 30 days for reasons such as defective or completely inaccurate content.
Vortemol Limited, a company incorporated in Cyprus, operates Plantin. The app was launched in 2020 by brothers Mykhaylo and Dmytro Grynets.
No guarantee is offered. The Terms disclaim the accuracy of results and encourage users to consult gardening and botanical professionals, and the paid Botanist Help service is the route Plantin itself offers for complex cases.
