SyncSketch is a browser-based animation review tool for images, video and 3D models, used by animation, games and visual effects teams to draw and comment on the same frame at the same time. Its tagline promises media review in the cloud with no setup, visual creative feedback and real-time sessions opened with just a link.
Trade press describes the product as founded by former Pixar character TD Bernhard Haux and fully launched in 2016, letting people review anything from still images to 3D models in a web browser.
SyncSketch announced that it joined the Unity family on November 30, 2021. Independent trade coverage at the time reported that Unity acquired the company for an undisclosed fee. At the acquisition, SyncSketch said it would stay platform-agnostic and keep supporting other game engines such as Unreal Engine.
The corporate transition went further in 2023. Effective March 10, 2023, SyncSketch LLC assigned its Terms-governed agreements to Unity Technologies S.F., so invoice payments go to Unity SF instead of SyncSketch LLC. Today the SyncSketch terms link redirects to the Unity Terms of Service, which show a last-updated date of June 30, 2026.
The centre of SyncSketch is a shared review session. In a synchronized review, everyone in the same review or playlist can edit, comment and draw together, and even a jump to a different frame follows along for all participants.
Synchronization is optional for individuals. Anyone who wants to work alone can click Leave Sync and keep adding notes, but SyncSketch blocks a solo user's actions when a synced session is drawing on the same frame, to avoid conflicting notes. Notes made outside the synced session may need a page refresh before others see them.
SyncSketch publishes its own customer case studies. The results below are the company's customer stories, not independent measurements, but they show which production problems the tool is aimed at.
SyncSketch positions itself for gaming, animation and visual effects professionals. It started as a free tool from people coming out of visual effects and animation, built for individual artists and students who want to improve their craft; paid plans were added later for studios and universities.
It is a weaker fit for teams that want a native desktop or tablet app, for anyone who needs the free plan for commercial work, and for productions whose review masters must play back above 2K inside the tool.
SyncSketch runs in the browser. There is no native desktop or mobile app: the company says it chose to focus its resources on delivering a great experience in the browser, because the web application would be in demand even if native apps existed. A standalone player is not planned, and on-premise hosting requests go to the company's infosec contact.
SyncSketch pricing is per user per month, with a free Light tier and three paid tiers. The pricing page renders yearly billing by default; the monthly column comes from the site's pricing bundle and, for Indie, from a help-center article.
| Plan | Billed yearly | Billed monthly | Users | Storage | Uploads |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Light | Free | Free | 5 seats | 1 GB | 2 GB per month |
| Indie | $9 | $12 | Up to 15 | 50 GB | 100 GB per month |
| Team | $19 | $25 | No cap | 50 GB, more purchasable | No cap |
| Enterprise | $36 | $48 | No cap | 50 GB, more purchasable | No cap |
The page offers monthly and yearly billing and says yearly billing saves up to 25%. In the pricing bundle, the monthly prices are $12 for Indie, $25 for Team and $48 for Enterprise, against yearly rates of $9, $19 and $36. Indie is also listed at $12 per seat per month paid monthly and $9 paid annually, and all roles now count toward seats.
Each workspace has one subscription: invited project members need a SyncSketch login but not their own paid subscription, and the owner buys seats for the workspace. Changes to seats or storage take effect immediately with a prorated charge or credit.
Every paid plan can be tried free for 14 days, and nothing is charged until the trial ends. Any major credit card is accepted; annual Enterprise subscriptions can be invoiced for bank transfer, while monthly and non-Enterprise purchases must be paid by card. The owner can cancel monthly or yearly plans at any time, which stops automatic renewal, and access continues until the end of the billing cycle.
Schools, universities and non-profits get a 25% discount with perks such as unlimited users and projects. The older Education Plus tier is closed to new subscribers, although existing Education Plus accounts keep their subscriptions. Because the terms link now points to Unity's terms, Unity reserves the right to change prices, including renewal prices, as of the next renewal date with prior notice.
The main alternatives split into asynchronous review platforms and live streaming sessions, and the choice depends on whether a team needs drawovers on 3D assets or live high-fidelity playback.
Against both, SyncSketch's distinguishing pieces are the 3D model viewer, the Maya and Flow Production Tracking integrations, and a free non-commercial tier.
Multi-factor authentication is documented inconsistently. The MFA article says all users can enable it in their profile and that Team, Enterprise and Education Plus admins can enforce it. The security overview instead says MFA is available to members of Enterprise or Education Plus projects. In the pages checked this round, neither the help center nor the privacy hub addresses whether uploaded media is used to train models.
No. The Light plan is limited to non-commercial use; commercial projects need one of the paid plans.
No. Invited members need a SyncSketch login but not their own subscription; the workspace owner buys the seats.
No. SyncSketch runs in desktop and mobile browsers, and the company has chosen not to build native apps.
Unity. SyncSketch joined Unity in 2021, and since March 2023 its customer agreements have been held by Unity Technologies S.F.
Access continues until the end of the billing cycle. To stay on the free plan, usage has to fit the 1 GB Light limit; otherwise a grace period applies before data above the free limits is deleted.
