What is SuperAnnotate?

SuperAnnotate is an AI data platform that combines annotation, data curation, quality assurance, automation and data governance with a managed expert workforce. Teams use its software and people to prepare datasets for model development and evaluation.

Core features

Custom annotation interfaces

SuperAnnotate supports data annotation and AI evaluation through custom forms built with a drag-and-drop builder or an uploaded form JSON file. Both routes produce a component layout that can be extended with code.

Component properties can make individual elements hidden or read-only for selected roles and item statuses, except for the Grid component. This controls what different contributors can view or change inside a form, rather than assigning every collaborator the same interface.

Form JSON exports preserve layouts, components and functionality for reuse across Multimodal projects.

Agent Hub

Agent Hub combines model-driven operations with expert review. Its four advertised modes address different stages of a data workflow:

  • Pre-Label: Foundation models produce automated pre-labels. The displayed example includes accepted labels and an item that needs review; it is a product illustration, not a measured error rate.
  • Generate Data: The service describes generating synthetic examples. Its illustration expands a delivery-address request into formal-tone and short-reply variations, rather than demonstrating the quality of an actual customer dataset.
  • Evaluate: LLM Judges can be configured to score, rate and rank outputs, alongside human review.
  • Intelligent Pipelines: High-value, high-risk or unclear cases can be routed to domain specialists, concentrating human effort on selected items.

Event-driven data operations

Orchestrate automates tasks in ML or ETL pipelines using triggers such as status updates, data imports and external events.

Pipeline automation includes webhooks and email notifications, custom code actions with libraries and dependencies, and encrypted secrets with access controls. These are separate from the browser code editor used to change a form's behavior.

Pipeline health monitoring tracks task completion, errors and success rates. Pipelines that meet the automatic-disable conditions are disabled when all eligible runs in the applicable 24-hour or 7-day evaluation window have failed.

Guide

Create a Multimodal project

A project combines a form with the annotation life cycle and optional item categories. Create a project as follows:

  1. Open Projects and select New Project.
  2. Choose the project type and enter its name.
  3. Optionally select a workflow available to the team under Team Setup.
  4. Optionally enable Category to support filtering, curation and task assignment by category.
  5. Build the form from scratch or select an existing template. A template can also be imported later.
  6. Select Create.

Prepare an annotation export

An annotation download selects both a file format and a subset of the project:

  1. In Downloads, select Prepare Download and choose SuperAnnotate JSON, JSONL or CSV.
  2. Name the download, select the folders and choose one or more item statuses to include.
  3. For CSV, optionally include instance creation and update timestamps.
  4. Select Prepare, then Download after preparation completes. Preparation can be canceled before completion.

For projects with external annotation storage, the download process also requires an annotation location path available to the team. The exported data is prepared in that location; the format choice does not itself relocate the project's ongoing annotation storage.

Use cases and examples

Agent trajectory review

SuperAnnotate's agent-evaluation interface is positioned for reviewing inputs, reasoning paths and tool use, including editing actions and creating datasets from those evaluations. This fits assessing the steps of a multi-stage agent task, rather than looking only at its final response.

Preference datasets and code examples

The RLHF offering describes hybrid datasets with a model in the loop and automation that validates code SFT by running it against databases. This is an advertised data-collection and validation pattern; it is not a universal guarantee that every generated program or preference label is correct.

Who is it for

SuperAnnotate targets teams building annotation workflows that need configurable evaluation interfaces, multiple evaluators and automated steps or AI judges. Its evaluation workflows also accommodate nontechnical experts and third-party annotation vendors, bringing domain review into the same process as technical evaluation.

Contributors using a Personal API key operate within their project roles. Project Admins can manage project resources through the SDK but cannot delete a project or remove other Project Admins; most SDK functions are unavailable to Annotator and QA roles. A contributor can have different permissions in different projects, so a function available in one project need not be available in another.

Platforms

SDK and runtime requirements

The Python SDK is distributed through PyPI and supports Python 3.10 or later; the documentation identifies Linux and Windows as tested platforms. Certain video functions require ffmpeg. Consensus functions on Windows and Mac may also need shapely, with the documentation specifying the Anaconda distribution for that package.

The Multimodal Code Editor uses Python compiled to WebAssembly through Pyodide, running in the user's browser. Not every Python package is available by default, and heavy data processing can exceed the editor's intended small-to-medium task scope. The documentation points larger workflows toward Orchestrate. Browser form logic and server-side pipeline work have different runtime constraints.

Cloud data connections

Storage integrations provide read-only access to source items, which stay in the connected storage and are displayed in SuperAnnotate. The integration catalog names AWS S3, GCP, Azure, Databricks, Snowflake and custom storage. This source-item arrangement does not establish where annotations are stored.

Databricks imports map table columns to form components. Single- or multi-select values that do not already exist in the project are skipped; one component ID can be mapped to only one column at a time, with a new mapping removing the previous one.

API credentials and permissions

API keys have Organization, Team and Personal scopes. Organization keys operate at organization and team levels; Team keys belong to a team; Personal keys follow the creating member's permissions and are revoked when that member leaves the team.

Team API keys have full Team Admin access, including downloads across the team's projects. Enabling a Team Admin's Access team API keys permission grants all available Team Admin permissions, which cannot be changed while that access is enabled.

When an organization requires SSO and a user has not signed in through that flow, requests with their Personal API key should fail, except for the Team Owner's personal keys. Team and Organization keys continue to work because they belong to those scopes rather than to an individual.

The credential documentation establishes scope and administration rules. It does not establish that every pricing tier includes every API capability.

Alternatives

CVAT

CVAT distinguishes a managed Online product, an Enterprise product and an open-source, self-hosted Community edition. The Community option is a deployment and source-access alternative for teams that want to control their own stack.

Label Studio

Label Studio presents an open-source platform for data labeling, AI evaluation and human-in-the-loop workflows, with installation routes including Python packages and Docker. It offers a code-access and installation choice alongside SuperAnnotate's platform and expert-workforce offer.

Limitations

Project structure and workflow changes

  • Project capacity and IDs: A team can have at most 2,000 projects. Reserved component IDs include assignment, meta, commentCount, commentResolved, commentText and score; component names cannot begin with an underscore.
  • Item names and import capacity: Item names are limited to 200 characters, including generated numeric suffixes. Integration or SDK imports allow up to 50,000 items, which is also the folder capacity.
  • Deletion and usage accounting: Deleted items cannot be recovered. Items uploaded and then deleted still count toward the number of item uploads.

Custom workflows change the default roles and item statuses. Only Team Admins or higher can create them; SDK functions in custom workflows require SuperAnnotate version 4.4.25 or later. This version is not the Python language requirement.

Project Admins and higher roles can access all statuses and make transitions between them by default. System workflows and custom workflows already in use can only be opened in View only mode; temporary layout changes there do not alter the stored workflow. A reviewer's workflow restrictions do not imply identical restrictions on project administrators.

Integration and annotation locations

Only Team Owners and Team Admins can create and manage integrations. The annotation location selected for an integration constrains compatible upload methods later in the project. New items added to external storage are not imported automatically; another import is required.

SuperAnnotate also describes external annotation storage for selected form-component values. Those values are stored in and read from a configured external endpoint, excluded from its servers and annotation JSONs, and require a backend configured for the feature. This differs from simply leaving source media in a cloud bucket.

Removing a component from external storage or disabling the feature does not migrate its stored values back into the annotation JSON. Comments on externally stored components still remain in the form's annotation JSON. Values excluded this way do not appear in Insights or Analytics and cannot be queried in Explore, although the components remain visible in Zoom View. External storage therefore changes the availability of particular project analytics as well as the storage location.

Export formats and links

CSV export supports component values that are strings or numbers, rather than complex data types.

Uploaded-file links in annotation exports use signed tokens valid for seven days and can remain available after the corresponding items are deleted. A separate Get dataset link for an externally stored project expires after one hour; anyone with that link can download the project data. These are different link scopes and durations.

Security statements and data residence

SuperAnnotate lists SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001:2022 and describes encryption in transit and at rest. These are vendor disclosures about its security program; this profile does not claim to have examined the underlying audit reports.

Its evaluation offering describes US and EU cloud storage or data remaining within the customer's environment, with role-based access and segmentation. Those deployment statements do not establish that every tier includes every location or configuration.

The trust center ties customer-data retention to compliance requirements and contractual obligations. Disposal of data no longer needed is described as following customer requests and agreed customer requirements. This is a contractual scope, rather than a universal numerical retention period for all projects.

Personal information

The personal-information policy says the Service is hosted in the United States and describes international transfers of user information. This statement concerns that policy's service and personal-data scope; it is not treated as disproving separately advertised customer-data deployment options.

Personal information is retained while there is an ongoing legitimate business need, including service delivery, legal or accounting requirements, claims and fraud prevention. When that need ends, the policy describes deletion or anonymization, or secure storage and isolation from further processing when deletion is not yet possible, such as in backups. It does not promise immediate deletion of every backup copy.

The Services are described as not directed to people under 18, and the company says it does not knowingly collect their personal information. This is a stated privacy boundary, not an independently tested age-verification mechanism.

FAQ

Q1. Does keeping media in my own storage also keep every annotation there?

No. Source-item integrations and external storage for selected annotation values are separate arrangements. The annotation location and the configured external components determine which data follows each route.

Q2. Does a Starter entry button establish free access?

No. The inspected pricing section shows plan names and feature inclusions without a monetary amount. It does not establish a standing free allowance, a trial duration or a billing cycle for the listed compute hours.

Q3. Can every reviewer use the same SDK functions?

No. Personal credentials retain role and project boundaries. Project administration, annotation and QA roles have different SDK access; one contributor's permissions can also vary between projects.
