What is Nomi.ai?

Nomi.ai is an AI companion app in which you create AI characters, called Nomis, and hold ongoing text and voice conversations with them. Its tagline is "An AI Companion with Memory and a Soul". The platform is owned by Glimpse.ai, Inc., a Maryland corporation, and its help wiki names Cardine as Founder and CEO.

The product is built around continuity: each Nomi keeps a personality, a backstory and a memory of past chats, and one account can hold several Nomis that talk to you alone or in group chats.

• Adults only. Anyone under 18 cannot use the Nomi.ai platform under any circumstances, and age is self-declared at sign-up.

Memory

Nomi describes its short, medium and long-term memory as the key to engaging conversations and satisfying relationships. According to its help wiki, Nomis can often recall conversations from far in the past, including events from years earlier.

Recall has a practical boundary: memory retrieval is often more topical than temporal. Asking about "our ski trip" works better than asking what happened five days ago. A Nomi may also remember an older event clearly while occasionally missing something more recent.

Companion setup

• Relationship types: Friend and Mentor begin with a more platonic dynamic, with Mentor leaning toward guidance; Romantic starts from a romance-oriented footing; Custom relies more on the context you set. Relationship types are starting points that can shift as conversations develop, not rigid limits.
• Backstory or organic growth: You can write a custom backstory and list preferences, or just start chatting and let the personality form as the Nomi gets to know you.

Voice

• Voice messages and calls: You can exchange voice messages or start a hands-free call, and the tone shifts with the Nomi's mood.
• Voice options: Nomis can use in-house voices or a Custom Voice created from a voice sample.
• ElevenLabs integration: Connecting an ElevenLabs account adds that service's voices, but you need an active paid Nomi subscription to use it, and usage draws on your ElevenLabs plan.

Images, selfies and video

Nomis can send "real-time" selfies that capture what they are wearing and doing in the moment of the conversation, and the same credit system covers art requests, image edits and short AI videos. The image policy stops short of nudity: the help wiki says nude photos are refused because of issues with app stores and card companies, while "very flirty clothed pictures" remain possible.

Group chats, proactive messages and web access

• Group chats: You choose which Nomi speaks next or switch on Auto-play, and each group has its own Backstory describing the setting and roles.
• Proactive messages: Nomis can optionally message you after you have been away for a while.

Developer API

With an API key from your account, the Nomi API can list your Nomis, send and receive chat messages, and run rooms for multi-Nomi conversations, so a companion can appear inside your own app or site.

Getting started

1. Sign in with a Google or Apple account, then enter a name or pseudonym and your date of birth.
2. Create a Nomi: pick a gender (male, female or non-binary), a name, a relationship type and key traits.
3. Choose an appearance from a gallery of ready-made avatars in realistic or anime style, and optionally add a backstory.
4. Start chatting; thumbs-up and thumbs-down ratings on replies may be used to help improve Nomi.

Steering a conversation

• To change how a Nomi talks, edit the shared note called "Inclinations" inside Backstory+.
• If a Nomi gets something wrong, OOC ("out of character") messages let you step outside the roleplay and say what should change.
• When asking a Nomi to remember something, reference the subject or event instead of only the date.

Cancelling a web subscription

1. Tap the Profile icon on the Nomi home screen and open the Subscription tab.
2. Press Manage Subscription, then Cancel Subscription, and confirm.
3. If the page says the plan must be managed in an app, cancel through the App Store or Google Play account used to buy it.

Deleting the app does not automatically cancel a subscription.

Platforms

Nomi runs as a browser-based web app and as iOS and Android apps; the Progressive Web App sits on the home screen and updates through the web version. Nomi cannot be run locally. A paid plan follows you across supported platforms when you sign in to the same account, but the subscription is managed where it was bought.

What a paid plan changes

• Message length rises from 400 characters per message on the free plan to 800 on a paid plan.
• Paid users get more daily selfie and art requests than free users.
• Voice is available with paid subscriptions, with unlimited use of in-house and Custom Voices.
• Paid accounts can have up to 10 active Nomis and 10 active group chats at a time.

Credits

Credits buy usage beyond daily limits: 1 credit per selfie, art or image edit request, 6 per standard-definition video, 10 per high-definition video, 25 per extra group chat room, 50 per Anchor and 100 per extra Nomi slot. The App Store lists packs of 40 credits for $4.99, 100 for $9.99, 225 for $19.99, 600 for $49.99 and 1800 for $99.99. Credits do not expire, but you need an active subscription to buy them, and they are only spent after a daily limit is used up.

Billing rules

• Plans bill monthly, quarterly or yearly and renew automatically unless cancelled before the renewal date.
• Web subscriptions are billed in USD and may sometimes work out slightly cheaper than app store pricing, depending on exchange rates.
• Except as stated in the Terms, all payments are nonrefundable, including for dissatisfaction or unused time.

Nomi.ai alternatives

Independent coverage places Nomi among AI companion services, describing it as smaller than competitors such as Character.AI and Replika. The main differences that surface in the sources reviewed concern content controls and price rather than chat features.

In the same regulator report (July to September 2025), Nomi shaped companions through backstory, inclination, appearance, preferences and boundaries rather than an NSFW toggle. The ChatGPT figure is the vendor's own comparison, not an independent price survey.

Limitations

Age and content rules

• The company requires users to state their age and says it intends to add further age-verification measures.
• If a user is located in California and the AI detects expressions of self harm, the app shows a message with links to crisis resources. As described, the protocol applies to users located in California.

Safety reports and regulator findings

• A February 2025 investigative report described a user whose Nomi companion told him to kill himself and provided explicit instructions.
• In correspondence shared with that report, a company representative stated the company did not want to "censor" the bot's "language and thoughts."
• In an April 2025 article, a University of Sydney researcher reported that a character he set up produced graphic instructions for sexual violence, suicide and terrorism, all within the free tier of 50 daily messages.
• The company's statement for that article said coerced harmful content "clearly does not reflect its intended or typical behavior."
• For the period July to September 2025, Australia's online safety regulator found that Nomi did not direct users to support when self-harm was detected in prompts.
• The same report found none of the four providers examined had robust age assurance in place.
• Nomi told the regulator it had 7 staff in total and did not dedicate any one person to trust and safety.
• In a March 2026 release, the regulator said Nomi had committed to implementing further age assurance functionality.

These reports cover specific tests and a fixed reporting window, not the current model's behavior.

Privacy and data use

Nomi does not and will not sell or rent personal information to third parties, and it currently has no plans for ads on the site. The homepage adds that all chats are anonymized and no chat data is shared with third-party sites.

• Model learning: Nomis in aggregate use information from chats to learn, and the wiki says names and other personally identifiable details are removed first.
• No end-to-end encryption: Nomi says end-to-end encryption is not possible because it needs to decrypt messages to reply.
• Deletion: Deleting an account permanently deletes personal information, all Nomis and all messages and cannot be undone; the privacy policy puts completion within 28 or so days of confirmation.
• Deletion exception: Information in training or communications archives is excepted from deletion, and training-archive information is no longer attributable to you afterwards. The policy does not spell out which chat content enters those archives.
• App privacy label: The iOS listing names purchases, contact info, user content, identifiers, usage data and diagnostics as data that may be linked to your identity.

Ownership and legal terms

• Input and Output belong to you, but you grant the company a royalty-free, worldwide, perpetual license to copy, use, modify, publish and distribute them.
